jay,
i hope wamjam won't mind if i pick up on your two questions.
grade 6 pa, 1970. i had a yashica electro 35. i was with the school paper doing both the photography and the news writing. while in high school, a classmate lent me a leica CL for a day. and it was a most unforgettable experience. too bad i lost the negatives but that camera had a very good compact and durable feel. i met him a few weeks ago and asked about the camera. he said he gave the camera away a long time ago after a local repairman said that it would be too expensive to have it fixed! he forgot about me who fell in love with his camera!
of course, the SLRs came in and i got waylaid for a while until about 4 years ago when a friend offered his bessa r with the 50 mm nokton f1.5 for sale. and the rest of the rfs just fell on my lap. :D

Posted questions which I didn't even bother to answer heheheh.

Anyways, the RF bug bit me in college, in 1985. Uy, that's 21 years ago! :D
That was the time when I too, worked in the school paper. The only camera I had then was a Nikon FM2. Then I found some old photomagazines from the 1950s and got intrigued by the old cameras featured there. The Leica RF got my interest. It was the opposite of the SLR, which everyone in 1984 was shooting with.

I got hooked on the thoughts of shooting with ancient equipment. Something which was meterless, a non-reflex finder, and absolutely primitive controls seemed to promise absolute control over the creation of the picture. The other features of the RF like its relative invisibility, 'objective' view, etc were discovered later.

My first RF was a Leica IIIc with a badly scratched Summar. Both camera and lens are gone now. I found it rather cheap then- priced low enough for a sophomore college student in the mid-eighties. Leicas were still be found in the second hand shops then, before the Japanese collectors started 'raiding' these shops :D. I aslo found Zorki and Kiev RF, as well as Canon and Nikon RF. In R Hidalgo of 1985, Canon and Nikon RF were not too expensive, priced only slightly more than the Zorki 4K cameras. I should have picked one or two of these then :p

I immediately fell for the Leica (and the prospect of RF photography) right after I made my first Leica exposure. The addiction has remained since.

Jay

Me, around last year lang nagka-interest. Di na ako kasi umabot sa panahon na "normal" cameras pa ang RFs. No family member was really into photography, either, though I have recently unearthed an old Canonet used by my sis to take my chidlhood pictures. My first cam was a cheap P&S (fixed apperture) Kodak. I eventually moved on to digital P&S. A while back someone mentioned lomos to me, I looked them up, read about XA's, and the rest is history.:D

It was only after I got a few RFs that I bought my first, and (for now) only, SLR, a vintage Fujica.

I like RFs coz they're fun to use, and it amazes me that cameras older than I am can produce really great stuff, for a great price, too.:)

Heh, I found this thread kind of random.

Well hello folks!

20 y/o Filipino here born in San Francisco but live in Daly City, where about 1/3 is Filipino.

Bought my first Leica M6 recently .... however, my lolo had a Leica IIIf which is now mine but needs a CLA. Still in good cosmetic condition, can't wait to get it working again.

My folks are from Bacolod and Iloilo. I haven't been back 'home' in 5 years and am heavily into photography now, which makes me want to back ...... with my camera!

why RF? because of Jay!
when? after talking to Jay!

hahaha. seriously, i got back into photography back in 2003, 10 years after college. i had an Olympus OM10 then but got damaged.

after buying a pro-sumer Nikon Coolpix 4300, i said i really want a manual camera again and was amazed by the leica, not even knowing it was a RF.

jill, a friend of ours, gave Jay's email address to me and we've been corresponding; him convincing me to get a russian camera instead...cheaper than any leica.

and so i did get my first RF. a FED2! for $11 on ebay. from then on, i've been fascinated with vintage cameras, especially the rangefinder. and then a year after that, i finally got a good deal on a Leica M3!

and so the fascination, and the convincing other people to go RF, goes on.

thanks jay...and jill. :D

hi

hi

hi everybody,am from quezon city and just stumbled on this thread.I've been using my m3 off and on especially when i started digital, but i noted that i feel much more fulfilled using my m3 with 35 summaron with goggles, or 50 1.4 summilux, or 90 elmar. Maybe it's just the excitement or the challenge to see if my shots would come out. Sometimes they dont come out the way i like it but its definitely much easier to compose, cause u can see the pic in the viewfinder.

hey ditoy. i assume you were the same ditoy who texted me yesterday. saw your post also regarding the M6TTL. hope you could be the one to buy it. :)

Hi,

Kumusta sa inyong mga Pinoy RF members. :) Eto yung kwento ko...

I received a Minolta P&S as a gift when I was 8. As a kid, I browsed through a Japanese magazine and saw a picture of boy a with an RF-looking chrome camera slung on his shoulder. I don’t know what brand it was but I knew that it was the camera that I wanted.

Fast forward to 1999. I bought a Canon Elan 7e with a kit lens from Wolf Camera (that’s the only camera purchase I’ve regretted so far) as an upgrade from very old Canon P&S (a hand-me down from my sister). I hung around online photo orgs and saw pictures taken with a Leica M3 and 50mm Summicron; I thought those pictures were of the best quality and wanted an M3 and the 50mm Summicron. I dug some info on M3 and when I saw a picture of it, I remembered the camera in the old Japanese magazine. :)

In 2001, I got my first Leica kit – an M6 and 50mm Summicron from KEH. From then on, I was hooked. I love using RFs because of the quality of the lenses, because I can see what’s going on outside the framelines, because the user really controls the outcome not some computer...and also for their small size. Plus, I still like film. I also learned about Contax cams and Zeiss lenses online. The bug bit me hard, I couldn’t stop.

In another forum, Jay (Zorkikat) was among the first to welcome me to the group. He introduced me to Russian RFs and lenses. He helped me acquire a Zorki-4 with an Industar-22 for starters (read: teaser). ;) When I met him in 2005, he let me to try his Jupiter-3. I liked it a lot. He told me about Fedka.com since I’m wary of auction sites. In fairness to Jay, I don’t know if he was aware that I was already deep in RF addiction. But, Jay aggravated it! :p

Sige Jay, tumawa ka dyan!... :D

Where would you suggest I go with 2 weeks in RP?

Where would you suggest I go with 2 weeks in RP?

My wife and I are looking for an interesting destination that's comparatively cheap, aside from airfare. The Philippines looks like a fascinating place, but I obviously need to narrow down the destination to one island, at the very least. I'd like to experience a mixture of nature, culture, food, friendly people and photography--who wouldn't?

Should a neophyte stay away from Zamboanga and Mindanao?

if you are coming in sometime march onto philippine summer, i suggest batanes. the sea, the beaches, the culture, the people and great places for photography! be prepared to go to the neighboring islands in the area if you wish to take photos worth keeping. it is considered a culture island where art, indigenous and western, is being promoted. but be prepared to stay for 5 days at least. the plane fare may not be that cheap but i plan to go back and go to the islands i missed the last time i went.
this is not a good dive area, however. the sea can be rough at times. but they have fine beaches ... not as good as el nido though.

just a humble sample:

for all intents and purposes, ditoy, you are in, technically and, moreso, with your intention to buy an rf. (and a good one at that!) epson rd1!? whew! whether used or brand new, you have money to burn!!! and a wife who is so understanding!!!

wam, i tried to convince ditoy to go for the m6ttl but failed. ako na sana kukuha noong rd1. hehehe. he got it for a good price, i think. (good for nuts like us).

#19 d_e - ditoy
#20 dragon64 - but where is your gallery? i can't find it here in rff.

How long do you have? It's fairly easy to go from one island to another, at least in the urban areas. Usually they're just about one hour plane ride, and there are great airline promos where a roundtrip between islands can cost as little as around $60USD. Manila has a lot of historical charm and character (also great for cheap shopping), but not much nature within the city, Cebu has beautiful beaches right near the city (with good, cheap food!), you rent a small boat and can go island hopping. Mindanao--I'm from there but have only been to certain areas. If you're caucasian, I'd probably stay away from the ARMM areas (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao). Not to say that they're all dangerous, but you might stick out a lot in some places. Mindanao has beautiful nature, since it's not as commercial/developed. I think, Cagayan de Oro (plus a trip to Camiguin), Dapitan/Dipolog (Dakak resort and Jose Rizal's place), or Davao would be interesting.

Other popular beaches (if you're into them) would be Boracay and Palawan.

Thanks for the good advice! I will have from 2-4 weeks in July or August, 2007. I realize that it's nominally the rainy season, but from what I've read in the LP guide, for instance, the wet season is not necessarily all that bad, aside from minor transportation delays. We can live with that.

Palawan sounds great, as does Cebu City. I would visit Manila since I would already be there anyway. Batanes looks great, but it may be a bit out of the way within my timeframe.

I don't like to lay out in the sun. I do love boogie-boarding, snorkeling and doing other beach-related things. But I don't want to just go to the beach after traveling to the other side of the world! I'm also interested in national parks, forests, volcanoes, that sort of thing. And seeing arts and crafts would be fun, not to mention the photographic possibilities. Most important: good food!

How are film labs and film availability in Manila? 35mm and 120 transparencies, particularly? I don't want to fog my film with airport X-rays.

Thanks again, everybody!
