I don't remember the exact thread size. I think it's like 39mm or 40mm. But it doesn't matter. Nothing you buy off the shelf will work with the summitar. The filter threads are angled and they use special filters which are really rare on the used market.
Buy this adapter. It allows you to use regular 39mm (E39) filters on the odd-threading Summitar. It's made of a pretty light weight allloy, and you should probably paint the inside of it black, but for $18 it's a damn good investment if you use the Summitar.
The Summitar uses a special filter thread that is tapered. Any vintage filter is usually over-priced unless you find it in the bargain bin.
I don't know the thread size off the top of my head, it's around 36-37mm. FWIW, the 127mm Ektar (LF) shares the same threading as the Summitar. So you can buy the adapter and use 39mm filters on that lens too =).
Check out - http://www.filterfind.net. I purchased an adapter and hood for my Summitar. Very cheap. Just email them and tell them what you are looking for. All in all, I spent less then $20.
The adapter is definitely the way to go unless you are into spending lots on accessories - which I used to do. . Over the years I bought a bunch of original Summitar filters in various glass colors for black and white film work but I probably could have just used the adapter which I also acquired later. It provides the ability to use normal 39mm filters and is great for that reason as it means less junk to carry. The original Leitz one is beautifully machined.
