Filters/Hoods for Jupiter-9 (Kiev/Contax)

I took delivery today of a beautiful J-9 in Kiev/Contax mount. From what I can tell, the lens appears to be NOS or at least very, very lightly used. Now that I have the lens, the next thing is to get out and use it! There is one problem, however...

Experience with the M42 version has taught me that a hood is a must. I also shoot B&W and often use yellow or red filters. This is not a problem with my M42 version. It has standard M49/0.75 threads. The new lens has My new lens has the wretched M49/0.5 thread.

Is there a converter or a source for hoods/filters in this thread?

I can't help you with an answer to your problem but I am interested to see there are different threads in use. Seems very odd that they'd do this, is there a reason anyone knows of?

I have had several Jupiter 9 lenses and all of them have used the standard filter.
Seems rather strange.

My Contax mount J-9 takes standard filters as well.

I have five lenses in Kiev/Contax mount. Two have the finer 0.5 pitch thread:

• Kiev Jupiter-8M (red P), 1960
• LZOS Jupiter-9 (red P), 1962

...and three have standard 0.75 pitch thread:

• Kiev Jupiter-8M, 1967
• LZOS Jupiter-12, 1980
• Kiev Helio 103, 1983

All my other FSU lenses are 0.75 pitch with exception of an Industar-61 in LTM from 1966. It also has the finer pitch thread.

My understanding is that the 0.5 pitch (called European Fine) was not uncommon at one time and I remember seeing stock at filterfind.net for that standard. Now, though is another matter.

I use standard 49mm filter in mine. This lens flares like crazy, haven't got around to acquiring a hood yet so I've been cupping my hand in a tube around the lens. Works just fine 😛 except that I can't see the framing as I take the shot.

Seems B+W makes step-down adapters from 0.75 to 0.5 thread, but the largest diameter for 0.5 is 40.5mm.

The Jupiter-9 gives its better results when used with a hood.

My 2 examples (both with Kiev mount) are from 1960 and 1968 and have no problem mounting filters etc. with the standard thread.

There is an ex-soviet shade for this lens, that's of the push-on type: very useful indeed and cheap also. I think it was made to fit on all types of Jupiter-9s, no matter what the filter thread was.

Filter thread is listed as "СпM49x0,5, M49x0,75" with push-on size of 51mm
(Translated: SpM49x0.5, M49x0.75). Unfortunately, it is not clear which factories and dates had which threads.
