Truth is beauty
I'm really happy about the X100 finally being available, so all this will stop... Wait: it could be worse then!

You claim that you see deep shadows, a lot of dynamic range and many other stuff, but I don't and neither are a lot of experienced members in this forum...
Think what you want to think man - In examples like this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/snipe_scene/5494573420/
I can see a decent amount of available highlight and shadow detail - not to mention I could probably recover 2 stops more highlight detail and probably 3-5 stops of more shadow detail from a raw file without excess noise or color clipping (not that I would want to - it would look flat and unnatural without a lot of tone and selective contrast work)

What has Fuji unleashed? Buy it, don't buy it. It's just another camera. Geeze.

A mass produced, digital P&S? Who would have figured.
It's not a P&S, by any reasonable definition. But it wasn't your intent to be reasonable, apparently.

Pickett, would it be okay if the above quote were repeated every fifth post, in every thread? Kinda like a permanent within-thread sticky. Or, the quote could automatically be activated whenever comments get personal. And you'll get full credit for thinking it up.

You're talking to a bunch of people who, if they're like me, will never be able to afford an M9. Fuji has just made available a camera that will have a similar user experience to Leica, and priced it for the masses who love photography. That to me is breathtaking enough. I'm glad that you can afford your forumla 1 Louis Vitton camera, but I can't. At least be happy for those of us who will stretch our wallets for the X100, and love it.
Some people buy cameras to take pictures. Other people buy cameras so that they can talk about the cameras they've bought.

It's a small, fixed lens, autofocus camera with lots of cool modes and stuff. It may be a very good P&S, but it's still a P&S.

This is debatable. You're on a forum where, according to the forum owner, the Hexar AF is a point-and-shoot.
If anything, it's the digital equivalent of a medium-to-high-end fixed-lens point-and-shoot - Ricoh GR1, Yashica T5, Nikon 35Ti, Contax T3.
Some people buy cameras to take pictures. Other people buy cameras so that they can talk about the cameras they've bought.
And yet other people don't by cameras because they're not really available yet, but it doesn't stop them from talking about them, holding their breaths and watching it become ever more breathtaking, picking words until $1200 becomes cheap and an autofocus compact becomes something different than a point-and-shoot, wondering what bags might go with it, and all the time musing about the wonders it will do for their photography.
It was a bit like that already when the Ricoh GR-D came out, and a bit more like that when the Sigma DP1 came out, but now it's quite extreme. I only wish Fuji would put the X100 on the market already in numbers so that people stop hyperventilating.

Fine, call it a point and shoot. But then you have to call Rolleis, Fuji GA645s/670s/690s, and early barnack Leicas, point and shoot.

I think people reacted a bit too much to the word "Breathtaking." I think these photos are very nice. I'll give the camera AND photographer credit as, imho, he's a talented shooter.
I like the colour palette (more blues/greens than reds) and captures in low light. Don't know if this is the shooter or camera or both. What I do know is that if I can produce photos like this out of the X100, I will be happy and give the camera credit. If I can't, I'll chalk it up to user error.
I wish he would post EXIF with the photos. If the shooter is reading this, could you?
I also note there are some more photos up there now, including some videos, which I like.

This camera seems to couch its appeal in solely in its appearance: very old school/film/Leica. It looks like a Leica if one glances casually, but then if you look at the back, ooh, it now looks like a digital Leica. Once you remove the resemblance - let's say Fuji just made another P&S with an optical viewfinder that looks like a dozen others - there would be no hoopla. I think it appeals to those of us who can't afford an M8 or M9. In terms of IQ, how does it compare to a Canon G11? No one knows. Yet.

You can see it if you click the "taken with the Fuji x100" (or something like that) link in the upper right. Full info there. ISO 1600 looks good, as does all the wide open stuff.

I'm the OP and I regret using the word "breathtaking". I was overexcited because the first firmware 1.0 images look so much better than the pre-production firmware images.
People who say "It's just a camera" are right. It won't replace my dslr's most days, it won't even replace my point & shoots some days; but I expect to love it's look & feel & ergonomics, and am glad that my new $1200 toy looks like it will deliver image quality equal to or better than what I'm used to from my dslrs and m43 cameras.
I often go out shooting with cameras (like the Olympus OM4) which don't yield the best results, but I just love using them so much that it's worth it. To have a camera I really enjoy using that also yields top-notch output is something I'm really looking forward to, perhaps a bit too much.
And if it's a commercial success, it just might start a large-sensor fixed-lens category which compromised and/or overpriced cameras like the Sigmas or Leica X1 failed to do.

Let's say I put my D700 in Auto-ISO, P mode, and AF-C mode, slap on the Nikkor 35/2 AF-S, switch it to Live View, and hand the camera to a friend who has never used a DSR before. Now they are using a $2,700-$3,000 P&S camera.
The X100 can be a P&S, but it doesn't have to be unless you need it to be one.

Seriously? :bang:
It has appeal because of ergos, controls, build, optical VF of worth AND electronic VF, big sensor, fast lens, size etc. It's not just 'another' compact with optical viewfinder, because there is no other compact digital with a decent optical viewfinder. The G series canons do not have optical viewfinders, they have a miniature peephole. It could look like a reptilian mud monster that got a perm and I'd still be interested SOLEY because of the practical functionality of it. The fact that it looks nice is an awesome bonus.
Also, we've far established that the IQ is on a different planet than a canon G11. In fact at first glance I'd put it better than my canon 5d. This can be seen in the dozens of full size/production camera samples that have been posted one after the other on this forum and over the net in the last week or 2.

It is small: so is Leica.
It is fixed lens: so is Rollei.
It is autofocus: no it isnt. It is autofocus and manual focus.
Also, it has a gazillion combinations of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and focus distance, which are all fully selectable by the user. How much more do you need to do something better than point and shoot?

I've seen on in the flesh in Tokyo last year - It has the air of a very serious camera IMO. Doesn't look like a compact at all. It looks no cheaper than a leica M.
Also considering also that it has NO modes at all, no mode dial, full manual mechanical controls, and a competent manual focus system with scale focusing aids, a big optical VF with overlayed focusing info + the ability to change focussing point size and choose between numerous focus points I don't think it's a point and shoot. None of the current or past point and shoots have these sort of features.

very breathtaking ... I actually like the pictures of pictures a lot. These photos are as good as my many other Fuji digitals, and that is a good thing.

I'm liking this camera,
though, i'm wondering how the value of it will be after a year or two...
Thinking may be wait for a few months til people start selling them.
