I posted these quick thoughts in an EOS M image thread, but I wanted to make sure it was available to any potential EOS M buyers...

Ok, I got my EOS M and 22mm today, early, from Amazon (nice job, boys).

Quick thoughts...fantastic build, really solid (both body and lens). The menus are just like my 5DmkII...fast to navigate. The touch screen is really cool...I like it more than I thought I would. It's as sensitive as an iPhone. New firmware is onboard out of the box. The focus is going to work just fine for me. I'm a documentary-method candid photographer, even on the street...I shoot very few grab shots...and the focus is fast enough. It's like the original X100, which I still have. Definitely usable. The colors and "look" are just like my 5DmkII...good, and smooth. It has a dSLR quality to it. It is night and day from the RAW files from my Sony RX100...the Sony files look like compact camera shots next to the Canon files.

I'm very pleasantly surprised. I *only* wish it had onboard flash...but 99% of my X100 shots were existing-light, and I don't light my 5DmkII images...it's not a deal-breaker by any stretch.

First quick portrait as I wrangled my daughters and kept them from rolling their eyes. 22mm, f2 wide-open.

$299.00 is the reason I bought one. I ordered it from B&H last week and it was shipped yesterday. I get it next week. Looking forward to seeing what it can do.

The files do have a lot of headroom, no question. For me mine still focuses too slowly for regular use (for me) but it a whopping good deal for the $$$.
 
Gary, the camera came loaded with firmware 2.0.2, the newest one, so I can't compare...however, it's easily as fast as the Fuji X100 was when it first came out. People complained about Fuji, and it got a *bit* faster, but it wasn't a speed demon (not talking about the X100s).

I think it's fast enough for me. I generally use center focus and recompose, and it keeps up just fine. I like it.

And like I said, it was purchased as a compact replacement, and there is no comparison...this shoots images like a dSLR. At the price I paid, I feel like I got away with something ;)
 
Yes, there is no complaining allowed. Anyone who has a problem with a $299 APS-C with f/2 speed and 35mm will never be happy!

So far I like this camera. I too got it for $299. The first two things I bought were a Leica M adapter and a Canon FD adapter. I haven't really used the kit lens it came with, but I'm very satisfied with my M and FD glass on it.

Get the new firmware, it changes everything, well at least the AF complaint.

Thanks for update. Just found out my friend decided against it because he wanted built in flash too... Personally I think at that price, he should have bought it... W/ the high iso capability, not sure how much it will be needed outside of fill flash work.

The video shoots and looks like my 5DmkII...1080p 24fps, manual exposure, 1/50 sec. shutter speed (simulates 180 degree shutter in cinema cameras), silent autofocus...that in itself is huge...film-look vacation videos :)
 
I don't have this camera but DO use a Sony NEX which is very similar (but less pixels)........In 20 x 16 inch prints it compares VERY favourably with my previous roll film shots from the last 40 years shot with Rollieflexes.........

...........So, with careful use and good technique one of these will indeed give your ETRS a run for it's money!......That's heresy to medium format users but still true!
