The negatives from my "first time with a Barnack" are hanging drying and I have to say, my, that was a time. All look very promising, I've been dreading taking them out of my tank - the camera came from ebay and I wasn't sure whether everything is all right - but it seems it is. I will share some pictures tomorrow.

received the 1938 III today...she's quite a Beauty
The two windows are farther apart then her cousin the IIIf RD
The RF window also has a LEVER which when pushed UP
makes a Brighter, Sharper Focusing
Shes also has Lugs ...were these an Addition when she was Converted and painted Black ?
Her bottom plate has some slight Lovely Brassing but the paint on her Bottom is not quite as BEAUTIFUL as the Top Plate
will Try and Shoot her with the iphone shortly....
I put the 35 /2.8 summaron on her,,,😀

My 1932 II is still on its way from NJ to SF.
The lever around the RF window is the diopter correction lever. It moved to the rewind knob area on newer Barnacks.
I think the strap lugs were standard (first in barnack history) feature on III. I could be wrong though. II, on the other hand, didn't have them when they first left the factory so some IIs got the lugs retrofitted along with other upgrades. The one I'm getting has lugs and flash sync added.

The best camera is one that still works!
When I bought my black II a few years ago from eBay it had a bloody great ugly flash sync smack in the middle to the left of the lens but was near immaculate aside from this. Because it made the camera look so god awful I got it for a song and when I eventually had the camera CLA'd by Youxin I asked him to remove it and replace the covering.
After reading through this thread of late I'm seriously wishing I hadn't sold my other screwmounts ... at one stage I had a IIIG, IIIf red dial with self timer, IIIf black dial, IIIc and another IIIf. Sadly I had a bit of a financial crisis and had to sell them to survive! 🙁

Keith, removing the sync during CLA is exactly what I'm thinking. I need to evaluate how awful it looks first though. Were you happy with Youxin's removal & recovering job?

The best camera is one that still works!
He did a great job and it only added $20.00 to the cost of the CLA from memory. It was one of those ones about the size of a dime with three small screws holding it in place ... it really looked awful!

i think i too am starting to accumulate a little collection of screw mount cameras and bits and pieces. really tempted to sell / trade my M3 for more, but i think i might regret it even though it hasn't seen any use since i've had the IIIf.

Very nice one Helen, I can understand why you would want it. It's how I felt about my IIIf RD. The seller let me check it out before deciding - I don't think he could have gotten it back from me after that 😉 It had a very nice but early thorium Summicron with it that I traded to Brian Sweeney for an excellent Summitar and it's been my go to camera ever since.

Coming to this thread late, but wanted to mention some things. I went through the shutter capping at 1000th sec on a IIIF BD problem, and Youxin told me it was difficult to adjust out because the camera was pretty worn - so condition can affect the problem and prospects for correction. He recommended a IIIF RD for its improved shutter, so I got one and have been very happy with it.
Also wanted to recommend a relatively low-cost avenue to 35mm coverage with a Barnack. A Jupiter 12 lens with the plastic Soviet finder can work quite well. I also use a VC 50mm auxiliary finder with a Summitar, and it is great combination. Love these cameras.

That's a White Dial IIIf - what a beaut, and very collectable - I have been looking for one of those for about 2 years now
Most III bodies had lugs, apart from the early ones. While both the II and III were in simultaneous production the body shell styles tended to get swapped around - the only difference being the slow speed knob. I have a III that has blanking screws where the lugs would be, and they are a factory fit item. I think they all had lugs from about 1934.
