Peterm1, being a bit of a novice I'm not really sure what it is that I'm seeing, but your images consistently have a painterly sort of look about them. I'd love to know more about your process.

Hi RohanKent Thanks for your comment.

Its partly to do with the subject (I like to shoot a lot of reflections, images with blur etc); partly about technique ( I will often shoot a reasonably fast lens quite wide open - much as one would for a portrait); and I will also post process to maybe bring out texture or to add a little blur / glow or to play with contrast - e.g. increasing shadow to hide non relevant details).

Some times in post processing, I will also play with the color a bit - to reduce saturation of some colours and increase emphasis on other colours for example. Its often a bit of trial and error. That's about it really

I class myself as more of an artistic type photographer (or more correctly perhaps, image maker given I use post processing a fair bit and the photo is only the starting point) than a reporter / realistic type photographer so I like images that do have a bit of a painterly look and are a tad impressionistic.

I work with a rule of thumb that a good artistic image (compared to a highly accurate photo that closely represents real life) is a bit like writing a poem compared to writing prose. Prose describes things in detail with not much room for interpretation. A poem leaves a lot to the imagination of the reader. That's more or less what I go for when making an image. If I can make the viewer think and interpret to create his / her own meaning then I figure its probably going to be a more interesting image.
 
From my first home developed colour film, some velvia 50. Shot with the Mamiya 6 and its 50mm lens.
