fuji folks & the 55-200 lens

looking at the 90 and i wondered about using the zoom at 90 and if that would satisfy my thirst?
i think the 90 is the better lens but the zoom is no slouch either.

got me thinking...how do folks use the zoom in their photography?

Mine is, for me, a reasonably-priced 200mm A/F lens. I don't remember retracting the lens for any reason other than to fit it in my bag.

Photographers use zoom lenses as a convenience to give them the focal length needed for a particular image without the need for carrying multiple lenses and continually changing them. Surely this is obvious and non-controversial.

The 55-200 zoom ring has a 100mm mark... try it out for a full day shooting and see if you like the FL.... close enough to 90mm.

I used this lens (55-200) throughout its range... often landing at 100mm at wide open (which I believe was f3.8.)
The 55-200 is an all around great lens.
Is the 90mm sharper... probably. It's definitely faster and "sexier" sitting on an inventory list.
If I still lived in wilderness I might have the 90mm Fuji (135mm equiv).
It would make sense having a dedicated lens with greater reach to combo up with a 50mm equiv.
As it is living a semi-urban/urban life... it's not the focal length I would use often enough to carry it.
The flexibility and Image Stabilization of the 55-200 is a more useful piece.
Fact is it would be more useful in that rural life as well 😱

The f2/90mm was a strange choice for Fuji to make in a "normal" focus barrel.... especially with the 80 macro coming out on its heals.
Fuji should probably have just done the macro in this Fl.

i like anywhere from 75 to 105...for portraits...i like having a longer lens around should i venture out past my usual city limits. i may sell the zoom and put it towards the new 80...

I think the 55-200 has its place. Sport, animals (including dogs and groundhogs!), outdoor stuff, higher compression, easier to carry in the bag than something faster.

I've been thinking of three lens kit of 18ish, 50ish and the 55-200. I was always impressed with the size of the 200/5 Zuiko.

I am really not a zoom person but this is my opinion, like the kit lens, worth its weight and size (which is nominal for the power of the lens.

kinda subtle landscape, looks best enlarged and was @100

I bought one recently, just before the Fuji rebates expired, so I haven't had a chance to use it that much. I'm not a frequent flyer of long lenses but the 55-200 is proving useful.

Like some have mentioned, I use it like a 300mm equivalent lens with some room to back off on the magnification if necessary. I've also found it to be useful for closeups due to the minimum focus distance. Although 300mm is sorta short for the subject, I've shot some photos of birds in the backyard. With cropping, it's not bad for the purpose. Fuji files can handle a good bit of cropping.

snowing today and tomorrow also...think i'll take the 55-200 out for a spin this weekend...maybe with the 16.
