Fuji sold (at least) one more new X100 due to firmware v 2.0

Three years ago I fell head over heals in love with the X100 at Photokina. As soon as I could, I got one but alas it was faulty and it was only returned with some difficulty (buying it from ebay). Once bitten etc. 😡

Although I stayed away but it was always the one that got away. Occasionally I have asked questions here since my heart just would not give it up totally 😱

After reading about the version 2 of the firmware I plunged into the deep yesterday buying a new X100 from amazon.de (up some €40 today!). It was about half of what I paid two years ago and still quite a lot cheaper than the X100s. I would have preferred the all black one but found it too expensive.

Although there are of course plenty of remaining improvements on the X100s compared to the X100 (even after the v 2.0 of the firmware) the only thing I really care for is the upped resolution of the EVF. But since I plan to to use it with the OVF primarily it is not a big thing.

Hopefully it will be my jpeg-only bring along everywhere camera - we’ll see.

So now the wait - and then expect many more questions ;-)

I bought my X100 just a few months after they came out and, whilst not having an issue such as yours, found it was rarely in use compared to my M6, M9 or X-Pro1 (the Xpro replaced the M9.) I found the AF too sluggish the MF was 'out' too often and it was a touch too small to hold comfortably. However the recent fw upgrade, a thumb rest and my renewed interest leading to a better understanding of the camera had led me to use it far more and with a far higher success rate recently.

I'd thought of selling it countless times to put towards another Fuji lens or another XPro body but I'm now so glad I didn't - at last I feel like I have the small, pocket able, take everywhere digi that I originally bought it for.

In fact its sitting on the coffee table with me whilst I'm out and about whereas the XPro is in a bag in tbe car.

Never thought that I would become a camera "fanboy", but I think my X100 is the bees knees. It deserves all the praise that people bestow upon it.

The in-camera RAW-to-jpg conversion that offers a whole menu of tweaks for exposure, shadow, highlights etc etc is fabulous . . . . I could go on and on . . .


EDIT: I did buy my X100 used (here on RFF), but that allowed the seller to buy a new X100s - so Fuji did make a sale !

Well, they didn't sell another new one, but I grabbed a used X100 at my favourite shop right now. Feels good to hold one once again.

Looking forward to hearing what you feel - how much faster it is. Saw a video on youtube with v1.3 and v.2.0 before/after upgrading and the AF surely looked much faster and secure in low light. Impressively so even.

Well, I am not the first to comment on it, but it seems a very clever thing to do. People sitting on the fence on going Fuji or not see a long term commitment to keeping customers havppy that very few other companies are even contemplating. I recently gave my NEX-3 away. I have always liked Sony, but I got a bit miffed that they suddenly changed the interface so that my quite expensive screw-on microphone did not work with cameras higher up the food chain.

I cannot wait getting the camera :dance:

Well, my story is a little different. I happened upon an unclaimed X100s at Arlington Camera in Fort Worth. Someone put the order in but never bought it. So, I had the cash and snagged it. Having used the X100 for a while, I was looking forward to the upgrade. My thought was that I could sell the X100 to get some cash back and take the bite out of the upgrade.

A few weeks ago, I started reading rumors about the pending firmware update. Curiosity got the best of me, so I held off the ebay sale. Well, I think I am going to hang onto both. It's strange because they are two different cameras with the same body style. Both sensors have a different feel. I have to say that despite all the mud slinged around on the interwebs, I really like both of them.

Good on Fuji for supporting this wonderful camera still. THIS is how you get ahead in business in this day. This is how you suck in the Leica-philes (of which I am one). This is how you gain dedication. NOW, having said that; Quit screwing film shooters.

I don't like the cheap thumbgrips you find on the 'bay. They usually have a screw to block them in the hot shoe and I'm afraid tightening this screw might damage the contacts. Then again these grips are made for a lot of cameras and don't fit any precisely.

I'm desperatly searching for the older Lensmate grip for the X100, the one wrapping round the exposure comp dial!!

Now the performance on the new and improved X100 is breathtaking! Feels a different camera. Manual focus is a breeze, peaking works fine, AF is fast(er) and close focus is great now.

That is very important information (thumb grip) - thanks for that. Saw that Lensmate also makes a "Lensmate Fujifilm X100S/X100, X20/X10 Menu Button Solution" - do not know how big the problem is, but it looks interesting.

The exposure compensation problem is the number one issue. Way to easy to have it end up at -2 or +2 🙁.

The menu button problem is not an issue for some. Kind of depends. It looks like they are just adding a glue on little ring to bump up the contact surface to make it easier to use the joystick like function w/o accidentally causing hit on one of the four other controller buttons around it. I think u could make your own by cutting down a piece of rubber self stick...

Cannot remember the level of "looseness" on my previous camera since I had it only for such a short time, but it does not seem very loose now. Maybe it worsens fast... Will keep an eye out for it. A lock would have been nice.

It arrived today and four things are immediately apparent to me.

-Firstly I much prefer the raws, so not a jpeg camera after all for my eyes / colour sense.

-Secondly the AF is even faster than I thought it would be judging from youtube (after updating to 2.0)

-Thirdly (so far so good, knock on wood etc.) since I have been unable to find any problems with it so far, I have crossed the threshold and absolutely love it!

-Fourthly I just KNOW I will take pictures with the cap on 😱
