Fuji X100 Digital SOMETHING from Fujifilm

This thread began 3 days ago, and now over 1000 posts. Is that a record?

The X100 appears, at least visually, so elegant and well-balanced. It is a singularly fine looking camera whether film or digital. We all wonder, wonder, wonder if it will behave as well as it looks. Do you think Fuji reads discussions like these?
 
I cannot read thru all the posts to see if this has already been posted but the price according to dpreview will be around $1,000 and it will be available in March 2011 roughly.

About a hundred posts ago, I posted my compilation of available specifications. The data was either observable from hands-on pictures or [photogrammetric] measurements...photogrammetry being my professional field.

I had determined the filter thread size to be 46mm within minutes of the Fuji announcement from pictures published...using the top view picture size to published camera width dimension of 127mm as a scale factor (0.5226).

That same scale factor also indicate flange to sensor distance [symbol] to be 26mm. [Important that the distance be under 28mm if a future mount be adaptable to M-mount.]

Elsewhere, I had also seen a post with a picture of a Fuji poster showing the accessories: a leather case; a flash, a vented [but not tilted] hood and a [filter?] thread adapter...still tracking down that actual page.

The thread adapter got me thinking: why not a front threaded wide or tele converter [Canon G7~11 style.]? If Fuji had optimized the 23mm lens to the sensor, then a front-threaded converter would not have disturbed that set-up...right?

Thoughts???

I have been musing for a new name for the X100-type since Fuji's announcement.

To begin with, all cameras except zone-focus guessing type find the range. RF is therefore common to all cameras. BUT, it is auto-focus...AF.

The VF can be, and has been called hybrid...HVF; or optical and electronic...OVF EVF.

It is definitely single lens or solo lens...SL or sL. 🙂

It is digital...D or d.

And, hopefully, one day it will become interchangeable lens...IL.

So......how about O/EVF for now and O'EVIL one day soon. 😀

they only had two beta models that were battened down... i just wanted to show that it was truly not that large, though there was no way to gauge weight...

Let me play "Devil's Advocate" here. Isn't it time we accepted that mounting M-mount lenses in front of a digital sensor is so challenging that all but Leica would prefer to invest in making lenses designed for the digital sensor? Sure, there's many here with a bag of legacy lenses, and another segment of the market has responded with adapters, but surely the largest portion of the potential market would prefer to work with new lenses that autofocus on demand? Camera and lens for half the price of a wide-ish Leica lens - it's hard to beat that (assuming acceptable image quality).
 
hey Chris, i am looking at this since it will be quite some time before i can afford an M9 and i'd really like to get a 35 FOV without using a wide angle lens i am not likely to use once i go FF.

and, yes, now and again i would die for autofocus... sometimes these old eyes do get tired, especially if i have been shooting all day.

It would be a shame to ignore the viewfinder in this. While I like using an LCD more than a SLR prism, I cannot say that it is better than a great VF.

Keep it simple. "DVD" - Direct View Digital or "DDV" for Digital Direct View.

Just some observations on the fly before I forget them:

They were very interested in the feedback about the design. I think they are so proud of it, they want to hear it from everyone 😀

In early photos we saw two different models and there was some thinking what this could be. The answer is, that they have not fixed the final decission for the design. One design is cheaper (cheap body cap and plastic body cover) and the other model is way better (with a solid body cap and leather cover). I hope for the better model because the other does not feel so good.

There was not much information about cooperations with other companies. Information about manual focus was not sufficient. Yes, you can focus manually but I didn't find out how.

EVF was just a mock up. You could only see a test photo in the viewfinder. The OVF looked good. I could only look through a camera mounted on a tripod but it seems it's usable with my glasses.

I asked for a dedicated ISO button and the answer was, that it's possible to put the ISO functionality on the FN-Button. So FN is user programmable. I asked about an intelligent auto iso like in the M8 where you can customize the upper iso level and the lower time level. This idea seemed to be new to them.

The aperture ring on the lens is full stops only. If you want 1/3 stops you can use the thumb wheel for setting the aperture. Does this make sense?

They should be proud, it looks to be a great camera.

My read is that they have Executive approval to build the camera. They (the engineers) know what they want to do, have much planned but are fishing for more idea and to obtain feedback.

Little to they know their design has the Net on fire, at least among us Photo Geeks.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about.

Sure it's a great design and all that but I can't see it being a big seller.
Serious enthusiasts like it but that won't necessarily mean great sales figures.

Even at $1,000 it's not cheap in the digital point and shoot world.

Now is someone designed a similar camera (similar money) in Sony E mount or micro 3/4 then that may be tempting.

I watched it 4 times. and from f/4 to f/8, there was no change in size of the white area. It should have gotten wider for f/8, it did not.

But, I think it is an easy fix, since it can have a data base for DOF and just read it for any f/stop and focused distance and put up the overlay to represent it.

It does move to a new a "NEW" focused point, (as the near INF point showed), but, I think it is just a high lighted area to show you the how far the point of focus is, with a little beyond each side.
 
I may add:

Fuji has come out with 95% perfect update of a old school Fixed Lens RF in a Digital equivalent. They must reading this forum for Ideas from RF enthusiasts.

I say 95% because we all have "Our Preferences" to add to the mix.
