Fuji X100

It's a freaking camera! Now that a lot of the hipe has left the conversation about it ,it just seems that some folks like it. .. ... and some do not. Me well I'll keep checking the camera bin at Good Willeys.

Correction... It's a freaking unbelievable camera!
Used mine tonight at a local hardcore concert in the city, It was extremely dark inside so I had to sit around iso3200-5000, f2, 1/40th, JPEG only. The results are froth-worthy. Truly epic for something so small, quiet and cheap. The lens is absolutely wonderful too!

Yes, it's a great camera. And even if the viewfinder is not a rangefinder, it's bloody good!
But as good as the cam is, it's not that fantastic, not as amazing as I have wished for.

I had the chance to shoot with it for two months and I liked it a lot, but not enough to buy one. If I lived in a big city, I perhaps would think differently. To me it seems to be a really good "street cam".

I now hope that the NEX-7 offers all the nice things that the X100 has plus some new featuers, such as exchangeable lenses and a faster AF. 😉

Just re found this thread after many years. No the FUJI X100 is not a range finder. But ‘plays’ like one. I still have a later version of this amazing camera. Not the latest, but it is rarely out of my hands. I was seduced back to digital Leica when the M11 came out. It’s a lovely camera, but it has its flaws… it’s still not perfect, like the M6 is. (For me.)

Leica for me is a lifetime relationship. But like all long term relationships, it often p***** me off . And a random thought. I wish Lego made camera that worked.

I love seeing this thread pop up again. I ended up with an X100S that is here somewhere, but more recently I picked up an X100VI which is miles beyond the earlier cameras. I treat it as a direct view camera that just happens to have decent AF, I’ve found the manual focus experience to be only good for backup. I generally run it in OVF mode with the little fly-in used for focus checking but really appreciate the ability to quickly flip back and forth between OVF and EVF modes.

But it ain’t a rangefinder.

I’ve never really used the manual focus on the x100. It’s not that sort of camera. Well not for me it isn’t. It’s more find the area you want sharp, hold the trigger down enough to focus, re frame and expose. Super quick, but still controllable. Oh and always have the auto exposure under a bit. I’ve found it to be the easiest reportage camera I’ve ever owned if I’m honest. After that the M6, then the M11, if, that is, I just accept that I have to abandon manual exposure and just treat it like an x100 that you need to focus. I find the manual exposure too tricky. Somehow. Again it’s probably just me, whereas the M6 is a doddle. By the way I love this picture. 1753171860356.jpeg

It was because of the form factor that people were comparing the X100 with the M8 and M9, but the X100 was far more like a digital Hexar AF. I haven't shot mine in some years, perhaps this is a sign to take it out for a good spin again.

X100 is fake Leica.
I have no interest in it, so, I see it clearly.

But you have it and this is success of FujiNoFilm, to have many like you calling is as rangefinder.

While it has cheap optics which are not comparable with M VF clear view.

Sorry to pee on your roses 🌹.

It makes me wonder about the general demographics of the people comparing the X100 to rangefinder cameras. RFF people would have seen a visual resemblance, but would also remember cameras like the Hexar AF and Contax G1 and G2. Autofocus changes everything. Fuji were very clever to make a camera with proper shutter speed dial and aperture ring, hearkening back to their own cameras like the TX1.

IMO, it's better (and surely, more valid) simply to consider the x100 as a camera, in its own right. Not as being "like a rangefinder". Or "like" anything else, for that matter. I don't actually give a hoot about its similarity (or otherwise) to any other camera.

I've had mine for more than 14 years. It still does the job very nicely. I'm still pleased with the results I get from it. I enjoy using it.

What more is needed? 🙂

I think at the time, I was just really frustrated with Leica—their first digital offering gave me so many headaches, and I was desperate for an alternative. No, it’s not a rangefinder I made that clear in the thread. It’s rangefinder-like, sort of. So don’t worry, you’re not stepping on any toes. 😊

And no, I know it’s not a Leica. I’ve had an M6 since 2000, (Which I still have.) briefly owned an M8 (Which was not great,) and also had an RD1, which I loved. I’m still a sad I sold that one. I have recently purchased an M11, which I’m slowly getting used to.

All that that said, I’ve consistently loved the Fuji X100—and still do. If the optics are “rubbish,” well, I honestly don’t care. I like the results, and it fits in my pocket. Truth be told, I don’t know much about cameras or photography in a technical sense. I just enjoy taking pictures—and was lucky enough to make a living from it for a while, before I returned to filmmaking. Now that I’m retired, I’ve picked up where I left off.

Maybe I’m ill-informed, maybe even a little clueless—but I really love taking pictures.
