Fujifilm X-Pro3 Thoughts?

Not this agnostic. I truly hate fully articulated screens. Nothing screams Dad at a Wedding more than guys who prefer this method of framing photos. I know it’s my hang up, but I’m not alone.

Wait, why do you not like fully articulating screens? For me, they are incredibly useful if I'm getting a shot from an odd angle where I have to be to one side of the camera. It's even more important if you're shooting a video interview, and you want to monitor composition while talking to the subject. It's one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to get a Sony A7xxx, Panasonic S1 or Nikon Z6, because their screens only flip but don't rotate.

The X-Pro 3 is somewhat different as it's a stills camera first, and the target market is unlikely to take selfies. The screen will still allow waist level shooting when flipped down.

I only do photography as art really. I don`t do videos and especially not interviews. This allows me to use what I like and do what I want. It sounds pretentious, but honestly I like photography as an art. I like my cameras a bit old school. I just find fully articulating screens to be tacky. I can get the shot from a weird angle a different way... like I`ve been doing for 30 years.

Exactly...Fuji drew a line in the sand.

I was excited about the Xpro3 until I saw they made the optical finder inferior to the Xpro2.

Out.

I get what you're saying, but handling the X-Pro3 for the first time, for me, as a spectacles wearer, its viewfinder is easier to see and less of a squint.

Also the eyesight dioptre adjustment has better protection against inadvertent movement (one of my bugbears about X-Pro2, despite taping it over, the tape rubs off against clothing and the dial moves umpteen times a day).

With only a quick try-out in a crowded shop, the camera appeared more responsive, with brighter EVF, and I liked the new feel of the shutter release.

The lack of an always open rear screen doesn’t bother one bit as I don’t chimp that often. In fact, when using the screen to check through shots taken, the flip down screen made it easier to view.

So, my first impressions are favourable, but I need a longer play with the X-Pro3 - maybe next year.

The OVF is now as functional as a standard Leica, as in 35mm is the widest practical set of framelines. It’s a drag for sure. As a 28/50 user, the X-Pro3 competes with any other EVF-only camera like the XE-3 or Panasonic GX9. The only saving grace for me would be whether the autofocusing with the AF limiter makes it equivalent to SFxF. Then I would be ok using a 28mm with the EVF. There’s a Fuji event at the local camera shop tomorrow, so we’ll see!

I just returned from the camera shop with my new Dura-black X-Pro3. I'm charging the battery as I write this.

Looking forward to getting out and taking some pictures with it.

All the best,
Mike

I'm betting that your new X Pro 3 will have a good home and see lots of use Mike. I have had only a short hands-on with the new model, and immediately noticed a subtle but effective improvement in the grip. For my use, the OVF on the X Pro 2 might be preferable, but I'd be curious for more time with the 3 to be sure about that.

The feel of the camera with the LCD in closed position is very nice, solid and elegantly done. Congrats to Fuji for their willingness to carry forward traditions that other companies have no time for but that many of us who are used to rangefinder form-factor appreciate. This is reminiscent of Konica letting their engineers have some fun and produce the early 90's Hexar. Of course even Sony lapsed from their usual design strategy with the production of the RX1.

Anyway, enjoy your camera!

David

Me too. Maybe somebody could reply with their experience using the OVF.
On my XP1 I could use my primes from 14mm / 2.8 (full OVF window) upwards where the 56/1.2 was not practical anymore.
I could settle with the range from the fujicrons plus the 16/2.8 as small lenses on the XP-3 but I am afraid only the 23mm and 35mm can be used with the OVF, and for wider and/or longer lenses I would need to rely on the EVF.
If that is the case I pass for the X-P3.

Jsrockit, David (DwF), thank you for your kind remarks.

It’s like Christmas came a few days early. I’ll get my X-Pro3 set-up this morning and hopefully be out by noon taking pictures. Apparently Firmware Update Ver.1.01 is already out for the X-Pro3.

All the best,
Mike

Only useful if you use an AF lens as the MF is way too kludgy. Much better to use EVF for MF. Frame lines in OVF way too small, really disappointing.
(tried the Xpro3 out today, started another thread).

Did those concerned get the word on the X-Pro3 Camera Body Firmware Update Ver.1.03?

All the best,
Mike

Just a heads up:

After I installed the new firmware I noticed that some of my menu choices reverted back to default or changed to something different. As an example the aspect ratio changed from 3:2 to 1:1 and the film simulation changed from Astia to Provia. Also one of the function buttons changed from what I set it to do to not doing anything. It’s a minor issue to set straight but it did surprise me.

All the best,
Mike
