Thin Air, Bright Sun
So, I miss manual focus. Or rather, I like to employ adapting my old Minolta lenses to my Lumix G1, but rather wish I had a more normal angle-of-view lens, so I don't use them all that often. And then there's those new, expensive offerings for micro-4/3, like the Cosina 25mm for instance. I wish I could justify the expense, but alas no.
And then this morning I was strolling through Nob Hill in Albuquerque, a second-rate 28mm lens in MD mount attached to my G1, when I wander into Kurt's Cameras. I took a look in their showcase of used lenses for anything in MD mount shorter than 28mm, but nothing. But then the guy hands me a box from high up on a shelf behind the counter. Inside the box is a new, never-been-sold Vivitar series 5, 24mm F/2.8 lens in Minolta MD mount. It's been at the store since the 1990s, merchandise that wouldn't move.
I took a look at the lens, the coatings looked real good, every surface appeared to be coated as indicated by the reflections. I tried out the lens, the images looked great. It was brand-spanking new, never sold, probably never mounted onto a camera. The focusing action was buttery smooth, the aperture ring clicking in elegant mechanical stops. I bought it for a great price. It was made, I think, by Cosina, back in the mid-1990s. May not be exactly the same as the new 25mm CV lens in micro-4/3 mount, but with my adapter ring it's equivalent to it for a fraction of the price.
Okay, enough bragging, here's a few images, just sample street shots.
