I hadn't had my Pen D3 out in a while, so I just loaded it in preparation for another ~72 frame marathon. It occurred to me I should update this thread for any who might be interested.
I got the meter working. Turns out it is was an easy fix, though I did rip into to everything checking the circuit. The problem was simply a poor connection between the battery and the cover. A small piece of brass sheet between the two solved the issue.
After trying TMax 400 (as shown above), I decided that I would give TMax 100 a try - I found the results to be considerably better. After that roll, I figured I'd give color a shot, so in went a roll of Ektar. Again, the results were excellent. These fine-grained emulsions really seem to suit the small frame size, and the wide DOF of the 32mm lens makes scale focusing relatively easy, even with slower films. Here are a couple of examples of each.
