For those keeping score at home, I got back on the same day two of my favorite lenses, a Elcan 90 Tele-elmarit and a Canon 50 1.4 last week, from DAG and CameraTechs, respectively. Been shooting on the street with good results, but thought I'd test them out at an event.
I volunteer as an event photographer for a couple of non-profits who don't have the funds to hire a photog but really deserve more for their social media campaigns than shots taken with a kit lens and onboard flash, and that's when I usually dust off my Nikon and my remaining primes. I shoot RFs exclusively for my street and architecture (I photograph a lot of residential architecture, and people generally are a bit weirded out by someone setting up a 4x5 in their front yard for half an hour), but always defaulted to an SLR for events. If anything, it gets you in the door and people out of the way fast.
But one of the reasons I got the M8 was to shoot without people terrified of me, or mugging for the camera. I'd say it handled quite nicely at this reception. Probably helped that it was at a brewery and there was plenty of good beer flowing. I even figured out how to focus with my ring finger and keep a pint in my left hand.

My only regret is that I lose 2 stops with the telephoto, and that perhaps I get a good number of people asking me if I'm shooting that new Sony camera ;)

And a plus side is that I can carry an entire kit, from 25 to 90, in my 'man purse' of a Domke bag.

I've considered getting a zoom for situations like these, but there'd be the speed penalty at all lengths, and it would likely never get used. I'm also impressed how much I can tweak these in post, considering the long-discussed limitations of the M8, especially for web use.
In short, I'm pretty excited to use this for the handful of weddings I'm doing this summer.
