GR Digital V to have APS-C sensor

I think that's a no-brainer if usability and handling are among the main priorities

i'm interested in knowing if all the cool GR handling and responsiveness has transferred well to the APS-C sensor ... but independently i still really want a DP1M because the quality is still a step above

I'm perplexed. A day or two ago my B&H status said, 'in stock, sent to warehouse, UPS shipping', but it has remained that way since then. No shipping notice, no confirmation email, but not out of stock notice, either. Maybe I'll just magically find it on the doorstep tomorrow. Or next week.

I think it depends on the parameters that define quality. The quality CAN be superior, but if you include reliable consistency under a large range of shooting conditions within your parameters, I am sure that the new GRD will beat the DP1M. Even in broad daylight at ISO 100 I can see banding in clear blue sky on the DP1M. Magenta and green cast is also another regularly encountered problem. High ISO a third. Don't get me wrong, I *love* the DPMs. But I have this intuition that you'd be happier with the DP2M paired with the new GRD, just an intuition is all.

Got to use mine a little yesterday... no photos worth showing yet, but AF is fast in daylight, hunts in low light a little. AND it does fit in my front pants pocket (and I don't wear baggy pants).

I am also curious about this. The biggest change to this camera series is the focal length going from 6mm to 18.3mm and the format increase to maintain the same field of view. I'm not sure about all of the quantitative relationships, but I believe that this makes the task of AF dramatically tougher at 18mm, not to mention the loss of the passive Phase AF sensor. This means the contrast-detect game had to be stepped up a lot, and I wonder if they set the AF performance threshold of the GR a little lower than be GRD4 because its going to be a little higher volume product for a more general audience.

that's some great input jon ... yes i did take a closer look at some of your hiking photos and noticed the banding and some of that magenta / cyan casts in your photos even at low ISOs. the problem with carrying merrills is that i'd always need ANOTHER camera to cover everything else whereas the Ricoh would take care of pocketability, high iso, better performance .... i'll need to handle one in person to make sure

Toying with mine. Compared to my worn GRD3 it's much faster in almost every aspect, leaving little to be desired.

The only complain being as Ming stated in his review, the Program algorithm does indeed refuse to choose f/2.8 (and stick with f/4, which might be the sweet spot of the lens) regardless of the lighting condition. Hope will be fixed in future versions of firmware .

was that a behaviour in your GRD3? when i used to have a pentax i always had to fight with the metering which was annoying and i'm wondering if this is some of the "pentax features" of the device

Hmm.. I don't recall that "feature" in the GRD III - Mind you, I did not use it in Program (P) mode at all.. weird.
