Lately, I have noticed in our "classifieds" a multitude of listings made by individuals :cool: that have just joined our community. The word must be out on the streets that this is the place to sell you wares. I'm not begrudging this phenomena, after all we all need to make a living. My point is that I now have to look to make sure that I am not dealing with a total stranger during "the heat of PM battle"!!! This must truely be the ying & yang of GAS. I want to see Canon 50/1.5 's & 50/1.2's & CZJ Sonnar T 50/1.5's (in LTM) "on the cheap" each time I click to view the classifieds but I also want not to be concerned with whom I'm dealing with either. AH, the dilemma of buying on the web...now where was I? :D
 
Back before the classifieds (when the For-Sale ads were mixed in with all the other threads) we used to self-police this "phenomena'. Members came down pretty hard on sellers who started a FS thread and had low post counts, especially if your first post was a FS ad.
 
Well, my take here is like on that other auction site. I'd rather pay a few dollars more to an established seller than a rookie. I will wish them well though, as they do support the site by paying the listing fee.
 
Stranger danger? Perhaps but this looks like a pretty good thing going for RFF. Risk vs Reward is the nature of classifieds. How much risk is one willing to take with a new member selling goods? Could be legitimate or could not.

For me the risk/gamble/personal paranoia? Not worth losing sleep wondering if I'll actually get the item I paid for. A few bucks more if a few bucks well spent on a trusted seller here.
 
If having < 50 posts qualifies me as a stranger, one of them may have been me. Boy, I was selling my heart out in the classifieds last week.
 
Look its buyer beware. Not every newbie is a crook. Do your homework. Trust but verify. So far for me I stick with posters I "know". So far so good with all my buys and sells.
 
I know that not long after I stopped lurking and actually signed up, I sold a whole pile of nice Pentax M42 lenses. I didn't have any problems with anyone on that though, and sold everything I had up. (and had dealt with one of the buyers elsewhere before) But good communication helps. Engaging in dialog with interested buyers, answering their questions, and pretty much reassuring them that yes, you're a real person and really do have the equipment in your hands that you're trying to sell makes a huge difference.

We all start out as newbies, like robert said.

(I think I also had less than 10 posts when I got involved w/ the RFF giveaway thread too... But no one really had any problems with that, since I gave away at least as much as I got!)

So I don't really have a problem with people starting out on the forum by selling (and buying), but I do hope they stick around and contribute more to the community than their left-over gear.

hmmmm well I just re-joined as my old login from a few years ago I had forgotten, I admit I re joined for 2 reasons the ability to find a n m6 or perghaps M7 body as i trust the members here and to sell my BronicaRf kit as I know the people on this forum actually appreciate these cameras and will ask sensible questions etc. Some people Like myself have busy lives when I'm not working 70 hours a week in motion pictures I'm out shooting. So I feel that it's a little unfair to begrudge someone for not having the time to rack up post counts. So are you saying that if I post a for sale kit of My Bronica RF645 at a bloody good price I'll be flamed or something. Perhaps i shall take my chances on Ebay instead. :(

I should ad that I also like this forum for the excellent information , but don't feel I have to add a comment to every post or thread i read. Hope this doesn't come across as unfriendly, and a s someone else mentioned it is up to the buyer and seller to amke secure arrangements that they are both happy with.

I'm also a babe in the woods on RFF. Haven''t sold anything but have purchased a very nice OM1 from Frank Petronio.

I'm just been enjoying reading the posts and checking out the great gear hitting the classifieds lately. Can it be M9 inspired?

There always seems to be a disconnect in what we write & what we mean.
No matter what the post there will be someone to cry foul, even though no foul is intended. :angel: There has been an increase in "newbee" listers lately, a simple observation. Has anyone noticed?
 
In many instances I was tempted to buy from single digit posters some are even 0 but I resisted specially if there is or are no references. it's a "buyer's beware" right and a couple of $$$ more I would trust my hard earned money to established members. I am not saying though I won't buy or sell to a newbie but I need to be more careful. A few weeks ago I saw a Hassy 501CM being sold at 1K with lens,back, accumatte and described as EX condition. I did ask the seller to put up some reference to make it easier for him to sell. He did acknowledge but even before the guy was able to put up the references someone grab that darn Hassy. Another one posted a black G2 with a posterized picture hmmmmm he was busy as what he says to upload a real picture at that time. I have also seen some sellers basically new members but are guaranteed by good standing members. In a nutshell, trust your instincts, newbs are welcome but be ready to get scrutinized. That's why I favor comments on classifieds in one of the discussions here. It shortens my decision making.
