Has Leica Made Rockwell A Better Photog?

I never thought I'd see him play around with expensive Leicas, as I thought he'd instantly dismiss them.

He seemed quite p---d off that the Nikon D3x had such a high price (he actually called for a boycott). I think he's trying to show that there are other ways to get D3x quality with something cheaper.

He's actually a nice guy. And these photos are actually pretty good, especially the ones at the end (bottom) of the page. The rock formations just bored me... because I have a friend who has gone to Utah and Josh Tree Park in CA, whose work fits my taste better.

Yeah, Ken... is just kenning about. ;) But who among us wouldn't if we were in his shoes? I'm afraid I would...

There are so many hypocrisies in Ken's™ writing, but there is some good info in there, and some veiled humor.

He must be doing something right, as he keeps getting mentioned here regularly, which only draws more people to his site to read about the RawReal™ or whatever it is.

These photos are pretty good but I think they could be better in monochrome. Having said that, however, I don't think based on what I have seen of his photographic efforts, that actually USING the cameras he writes about is his strong point. :^) Sorry KR if you stumble across this post.

However on the subject of his writing, I don't know why KR takes so much "stick" from people who often seem to continue reading his blogs just for the opportunity of being outraged by it. He has some odd views and expresses them a bit too forcefully sometimes but I keep coming back and rather enjoy reading his blog on the whole. If I am finding an article tedious or I think he is wrong, I skip it and go on to the next.

He seems like an OK kinda guy and his blogs are on the whole entertaining so whats the big deal.

My intuition tells me that many of his most outspoken critics are just p#ssed-off that he makes his living doing what they either cannot or are not brave enough to try - playing with cameras.

What do YOU think?

I like alot of Ken's landscapes but these photos did nothing for me. As for sharpness, my Lumix G1 does just as well with a little help from Picasa "sharpen".

/T

It's pretty easy to sharpen a 800-pixel wide jpg so it looks crisp. It has nothing to do with distinguishing anything but the grossest lens qualities....

he wrote me planning to bid on my summicron asph 35mm on ebay. he said he'd write on leica for now since he got priced out of nikon.
i ended up ending the auction early after a pro photog in NY named a price for cash payment.

I actually enjoy his articles, though don't always agree with him. In these days of political-correctness in everything we do, it's nice to come across someone prepared to speak his mind.
His mother drives -- or used to drive a Nissan 350Z -- he once had it up for sale on his site.

I generally don't much like Ken's super-saturated look, but I have to say I think some of the shots in that series are excellent.

My thoughts as well...like Spinal Tap turning the amps all the way up to 11. :) Now I see he's compared Leica to Contax, let's see if he rectified his previous contradictions...

He might as well shoot more with a Leica. He's probably been seeing RFF as a big referral site to his site. Ken gets good play here.

.

KR's reputation is well known.

But on pure merit, I like these photos, he's done well and if I had taken them, I'd be happy with them as well, very happy actually.

I love 35mm and have always said I don't like super-wides but that 28mm Leica lens is something else. I'm *seriously* thinking about a 28mm lens now for my M2.

More importantly, I now have an itch to shoot some Velvia and hopefully afford the Lee RF75 system soon as well.

Composition and choice of subject is not bad. Color looks way pumped up. He certainly does have a predilection for verticals.
