While field of view might be the same, the angle of view plays a larger roll in the appearance of a photo. Compression with a 75mm will be far greater. That being said, I actually prefer portraits with 50mm.

True. Until recently I used the 50 on my R-D1, so I've mostly 'known' it as a 75.
Perhaps it turns out that what I really want is a 75 with 0.7m close focus. Hello Leica...
