Help attaching the lens

I received an M6 in the mail today and the first lens I'm plan to shoot with is the ELMAR-M 1:2,8/50mm. And I'm a bit baffled. It collapses and expands. The instructions say:

The camera is only ready for use when the ELMAR-M 1:2,8/50mm has been fully extended and locked. ​

When I fully extend the lens and turn a bit to the right, I hear a click. But I can still collapse the lens back in. How will I know when it's properly "locked"?

I'm new at this. Any advice is appreciated.

Rachel,

When you attach the lens, and it is collapsed, you'll hear the initial "click" signalling that the lens is installed correctly.

When you extend the Elmar; pull the front element out away from the body and once it's out all the way simply turn it to the left (if the camera is facing AWAY from you) or to the right (if the camera is facing TOWARDS you). The lens should be ready to shoot at this point.

With my collapsible Summicron I do not hear any "clicks" when I extend the lens and turn it but I know it's ready to shoot because I a) can't turn the lens further and b) I can no longer push the lens back into its collapsible position.

I know that's a bit of a convoluted explanation but hopefully it helps you.

That little click you hear when roating the lens clockwise (after estending it) means that it is locked. It isn't actually locked, it's just held there by friction. No worries, you're doing it properly.

The title of the thread seems wrong. If the lens is already attached to the body, then all you need to do is extend it (pull it out, away from the camera body, by the front-most ring) and turn it clockwise as far as it will go. You should not then be able to collapse it. If you can, there's something wrong with the barrel at its rear. I must say that while I know other collapsible lenses, I have never seen this one. The procedure is the same for all, though.
