Help me find a 50mm lens for the M3 here..

For my M3 I have had:

50/2 collapsible
50/2 Planar
50/1.5 Sonnar
50/1.4 Summilux V2
50/1.4 Asph silver
50/2 Planar again

I have finally and permanently settled on a super clean and CLA’d rigid Summicron, the perfect combo of character, contrast, sharpness, period nostalgia and size.

Don't think I've seen the Canon 50mm f/1.4 LTM mentioned yet. Also relatively inexpensive, and should be plentiful on the 2nd hand market. There's a long thread (10 pages and counting) with image samples here:
https://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86792

It's my most used lens, and I also have some image samples in a Flickr album:

I would love a Summicron rigid or a Sonnar but right now i will probably get a Canon.

I need a film scanner and film developing gear so i will save some on the lens and complete the workflow.

I seem to have accumulated quite a few 50mm lenses of late, which I use on my M2 and M3 bodies. Given your interest in a compact lens that also can shoot at f2, and with attention to cost, I think your best bets are:

Canon 50/1.8 (yes, get a clean one; mine is sparkling clean); still the best value per dollar out there. Note: the Canon 50/1.4 is significantly larger than the 1.8

Canon 50/1.5 (great for portraits but also solid for general use)

Nikkor-HC 50/2.0 (like the Canon 50/1.5, a sonnar design and about the same size, focuses down to .5 m)

Voigtlander Skopar 50/2.5 (OK, you can't shoot at 2.0 with it, but 2.5 is not that much slower). Like Erik van Straten says, it's a great handling and very sharp little lens; has superb flare resistance too.

7ARTISANS 50 1.1. I like it so much I have two - silver and black. I also have lots of other Leica 50 glass, but this is by far the best deal out there. Something like $350 new, available used for under $300.

Beautiful 356C. The Caterham below is stunning too. Nothing wrong with that lens, or film!

Cheers

J 🙂

Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM

Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM

I picked up a mint one on ebay from a Japanese seller. Came as described, well worth paying a bit more for no haze, fungus, and all.

Here is a sample image on ~10 year old expired Superia 400 film:

My first impression was of a II, since it has no strap lugs. But it bothered me that it didn't look like a black paint finish (it didn't look like chrome either; more of a "dust" finish). So after Colker posted the serial number, I looked it up: Ko.Fe. called it right. It is a IIIa from 1935.

It couldn't have been a II to begin with since the II does not have a slow speed dial...

I was lucky enough to find a very clean example and have kept good quality B+W filters on the front since, so no scratches and no haze.

Mine is a 126xxxx

Ditto, mine is an earlier serial number from 1953.

Lots of very nice 50s out there. Examples... the Nikkor 5cm f2 is great, a good Jupiter 8 is too, the Elmar 2.8, Industar 10, and the Konishiroku 5cm f3.5 is very sharp.

A couple of weeks ago I took a bunch of boring shots with my various 50s to see basic differences between them. All handheld and RF focused. On a few I think I missed focus a bit. Album here. For anyone that wants to see them. The Nikkor was CLA'd by Youxin Ye, the Summicron by DAG.

It was also the favorite lens of Cartier-Bresson!

Serial number of mine is 1319235 (LTM).

Leica MP, Summicron 50mm f/2 Collapsible, 400-2TMY.

(dull scans, I will print these soon on Adox MCC 110)

My scans such a disappointment compared to darkroom prints !
The Lens 50mm Collapsible-Summicron is low contrast..
The group shot by Erik typical of this lens, the image stellar.
I don't advise buying one due to poor samples available..
The same for my M3, the best Leica ever but now really old and risk of viewfinder malfunction..

Could you briefly tell me about the viewfinder fitted to the camera in your first image please? What is it; value? I have one here, but really don't know anything about it other than it seems very nice to look through. Recently several Leicas arrived with various 50mm lenses, and as a Leica newb I've been following this discussion with interest, trying to weigh up the pros and cons of various types.
Cheers,
Brett

Thank you, Leicapixie, I agree that this shot is typical for the Collapsible, much different from the Rigid. Quattro Fontane in Rome.

I keep an old M3, but with a great finder, as a donor for the moment that the viewfinder of my black M3 crashes.

Erik.

Dear Brett,
looks like a SBOOI I guess?
Worth: In Europe, usually some EUR 40 to EUR 80 (unless it comes w/original leather case/paperwork etc.).

That is a SBOOI which is a 1:1 (lifesize) 50mm viewfinder. On the IIIG it isn't essential (IIIG finder is better than the earlier Barnacks) but it is still nice to frame that way as you can keep both eyes open and see everything in front of you. I think I paid about $100 for mine but they are all over the place in price. Give it a try and see what you think.

Once had made a test comparing 32 normal lenses on "FF" digital Sony A7.
Mostly it's SLR lenses, still hope that it may be helpful for also included are 8 RF lenses, Canon LTM f1.8/50 2 versions, f1.5/50, f1.4/50, CZJ f1.5/50, Jupiter 8 f2/50mm, Nikkor-S f1.4/5cm, S-Topcor f2/5cm. Here it is: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuuanslenstests/collections/72157670921126335/
Someone once had asked me if he could use these photos for a site to more easy compare, that's to be found here: https://www.lenshunters.com/tests/a7-normal-lenses-test/ it's a very useful site: https://www.lenshunters.com/
cheers, andreas

SBOOI allows to frame with both eyes open, it is true 1:1 VF. M3 one isn't. I sold my M3, because Zorli and I guess LTM Leica has 1:1 RF window as well. I don't have to close my eye to focus and to frame. I put SBOOI on M4-2 and on R2M sometimes if I'm into fast shooting with 50.
