The other day my external hard drive fell to the hard floor about 18 in. and it was damaged. I've got about 5,000 images on it. Two companies here said they can't fix it. Can anyone recommend someone worldwide who might be able to retrieve the files on it? Ugh!

Thanks,
Bill

Clayton Computer in St. Louis was able to get my images off my failed external drive, and transfer them to a new one. In my case, it was the drive's power supply that was bad. The drive mechanism was OK. They took it out of its case and mated it to a good power supply in order to get the data off it. If your drive was damaged mechanically, so that the drive itself, and not just the power supply is damaged, that might be why they said they couldn't do it.

Well, if the actual drive is damaged, it will probably involve some service like Salvagedata or Kroll Ontrack that can rebuild damaged drives or read them with external means in a clean room laboratory. Far from affordable, though, even more so if it is a matter mechanical damage to the platters...
