There are - without a doubt - political reasons why the self-appointed US federal government cultivated a national sporting agenda instead of simply adopting the existing international ones.
Um, what? I was unaware that the current US government adopted all the sports we US citizens enjoy today. Or perhaps you mean 100+ years ago, when we began playing baseball, basketball, and later, US-style football. I was unaware it was a conspiracy!
Hurling, Rubgy, Cricket, Soccer ... I doubt you play these classic sports in your "american" schools - not because you don't wish to, but because another force doesn't want you to.
You'd be wrong. Many schools, public and private, have rugby and soccer teams. In fact, soccer is so popular in the lower grades that mothers who drive their kids around to games in mini-vans have been dubbed 'Soccer Moms'.
Hurling? No, not so much. Cricket? Who has the time? On the other hand, we have Lacrosse.
Most of these sports are not much followed after school graduation. Americans tend not to care about Soccer, Rugby, or Lacrosse after they enter the work force, and most seem to prefer following basketball, (US) football, and baseball, with a little hockey thrown in for good measure. There's always golf, for the more sedate.
But the notion that the US should be more like the rest of the world and choose to like the same sports the rest of the world likes...ugh. And you know what? That's probably how most Americans feel about it. It has nothing to do with any federal government or any conspiracy. We're just not like you guys, and we're pretty happy about that in general. You're all cool and all, but we do what we like and you guys go do what you like. We don't need your approval to like our sports, or that of our government.
