How do you justify more than one?

I have two Leicas. M3/M6, M3 for color, M6 for B&W. That was my first justification. Now I want to pass my Leicas down to my kids. Well I have three kids. Hmmmm
So there may be an M2, M4 or maybe even a MP for me sometimes down the road..
How do you justify more than one M? When really all you need is just one camera to get the job done.

I have only one MP+50mm cron... So... If I want something done with 28mm I get my Olympus OM-1n from the bag... I wish I could have something like MP 0.58 for 35mm or 28mm shooting... But that will cost me some money... 🙂

I think, you need to get M4 or M2... MP is not exactly equal to M6 and M3... It will make some of your kids jealous...

Why would you have to justify more than one camera anymore than more than one fishing rod or more than one lure? Unless the kids are doing without shoes, there is no ethical component to owning cameras! The bigger question is, will your kids really even want your Leicas?

I have more than two M-Leicas and other cameras, too ... but I don't think that I have to justify this.
If you want to have another camera and money is not a too big problem: buy it!

I think trying to balance out which cameras to leave for which kid is far more difficult than justifying owning more than one camera.:angel: Great idea, with one caveat, as I was not happy with my brother getting my dad's side-by-side shotgun when he died when I was the only one who used it for 10 years whilst growing up. For some of us, an heirloom is important. For some, though, the arguments over money and possessions are bitter and begin before the body is buried in the cemetery and only ends with their own deaths.😕

Crazy world but kudos for what you want to accomplish. Here's hoping the kids will eventually understand why it is/was important to you.🙂

1 - Until there is a f/2 Leica M zoom 28-50, I tend to shoot two cameras at the same time.

2 - I use a 0.58x finder for wides, and a 0.72x for normal lens

3 - backup. DAG is kind of slow to send my cameras back. I need to have something to shoot with in the mean time.

4 - Because I can: M's are so similar that my wife doesn't really realizes how many I have 😀

For me it's mostly about film types, I'll have slow film in one for during the day, and fast in the other for night time. I also have a couple of other cameras for stuff like XPro, Redscale etc.

Also, there are frame line issues with range finders, so if you like long lenses and also wides, you'll probably end up with more than one camera.

Finally, much as my M3 is the bee's knees, the automatic facilities of other cameras suit me on occasion.

I second that! Me? I feel that I own camera equipment that is worth waaaay more money than my talent as a photographer can "justify". I have been saving up money over the years that makes me able to buy, well not anything I want, but close enough. I have decided that this is what I will spend my money on. I don't have a car, for instance. People spend insane amounts of money on their cars. I don't spend a penny on it. That's my main justification. I don't know what kind of money you spend on other things in your life, but an old film M? Come on, it's not like it's an insane ammount of money we're talking about.

And if you need a justification, I think the one you have already is great: One for color, one for B/W. What's the fuzz?

Also one for colour, one for b/w, although (being an M3 and M2) one also works much better for 50mm/90mm lenses and the other is better with 35mm. I find the 90mm quite hard to focus precisely with the 0.72x finder.

I don't feel a need to justify them. I only have two. An M3 and M4-P.

Buy some film and enjoy.

I would agree with most people on here, m film cameras don't need that much justification. If you problem included another hassy h4d then it might be a little tougher.

I carry two cameras too. For me no justification is necessary as it's just a hobby. Right now I have three M bodies and two kids, so someone will get lucky I guess.

M4 for when I feel like shooting all manual, Hexar RF for when I feel like shooting all auto, R-D1 when I feel like shooting a lot and some chimping will be helpful. I only shoot color, btw.

The MP would be for me, I am not dead yet. I might just go ahead and pass down the M6 to my oldest. If he sells it for drink and song I will come back and haunt him.LOL
He is a good kid, man I mean, I am sure he would cherish it since he loves to go out shooting with me.

I think you answered your own question. You justify the 3rd Leica by the 3rd kid. Obviously you love them (Leicas and kids), or you wouldn't have thought of it. Go ahead and buy it.

I only hope they appreciate the legacy. My neice just started college, and decided to major in photography. She only shoots digital, so I gave her my Canon P with 50mm 1.8 lens plus a Gossen Pilot meter for graduation. I don't think she's even taken them out of the box. Makes me wish I'd given her the cash instead.
