I have four kids and I have four Ms - M4, M5, M6, and M7. I don't delude myself that they are heirlooms to hand down to my kids. They all shoot digital and have shown no interest whatsoever in taking one of the Leicas. I guess I have failed as a parent! I do have a daughter-in-law and a niece who just may score big, though, as they love film, especially B&W. Maybe the grand-kids?
I did stick a note in the safe explaining the value of my Leica gear, so they don't get bamboozled should they want to sell them.

Once I used 5 M-mounts at once for testing IR film, which has to be loaded in complete darkness. Easier to pre-load 5 bodies than to find somewhere light tight, or faff around with a changing bag.

Chances are your kids are going to use p&s or DSLRs, or if we're lucky a Nex.
They will ebay that M the week after your funeral, and go on a vacation.
Just buy what you will use.

I do have the perfect excuse. I make Rapidwinders that go on M's and I have to have s selection of M-bodies to test them on! This is my excuse and I am sticking to it.
I have also noticed that most disasters happen when you change lenses, you really need three hands to do it and it is easier to carry 2-3 bodies instead with lenses attached to them. Bad enough to drop base-plates or winders - lenses can be really expensive to drop.

Leica Ms are all different (like children). Variety is the spice of life. The more Ms the merrier.

I have no illusions that my kids are going to want to use my cameras in the way that God, Leitz and Eastman Kodak might have intended and while some are sure to be sold I feel that some will be kept as reminders of me and growing up with me that nothing else could provide. Having said that, I bought this equipment for me and I intend to get another 25 years of fun and self fulfillment before relinquishing possesion 🙂
(when the selling time comes I am sure my kids will be wishing I would of bought some black paint bodies instead of just spending so much time looking at them)

One film M is certainly not enough! I need two so I can shoot color and black and white at the same time.
If I had an M9, it'd be a different story. Ive recently come to the conclusion that a two M, two Rolleiflex kit is perfect for me. I can have color and b/w loaded and either go 35mm of MF. Or, I can mix and match: One M and one Rolleiflex.
Anyway, there are plenty of ways to rationalize 🙂

Yeah, yall should be ashamed, having so many Ms. Sell a few cheap here in the classifieds and get them back into circulation. 😉
I don't have an M but I do have 2 screw mount cameras. One old beater - messy curtains, engraved, scratched all over with a hard to use finder and a clean, somewhat recently CLA'd one that has issues at high speeds. I end up using the beater most of the time as I trust it more but its good to be able to load fast and slow film at the same time given my Seattle weather.
That said, I'll probably give up the nicer one some time and put the funds towards an M2 or R2A. My lenses are all LTM so and the IIIc would work as a pair of bodies for me.

my better half hasn't asked for any justification yet on the 4 leicas and 5 other cameras in my dry cabinet, so I don't have any idea what to say.

I could do with one, never take two with me on a day out. But I like the idea of having a backup nearby, peace of mind, especially when traveling when repair or replacement would be impossible. I also kinda like the option of having one body with low iso film for outdoors and being able to just swap to iso 1600 by putting the lens on the other body. Hasn't happened yet that I was actually prepared to do so though, I always travel light an just make do with one body.
I'm also planning to get the viewfinder upgrade on one body, so I really need a second body to sit that out.
All that, and they're wonderful kit.

I think there's one line that would justify it all. "I like to collect cameras" This way every new addition is for the sake of the collection, and no collection is ever finished 🙂
