I'd like to hear from people in different parts of the world about how long you have to wait for your Leica M Type 240s.

I wish I knew. Dealer estimates range from six to fifteen months when ordering now.

Yes, but nearly all of them either have a special relationship with their dealer or ordered at Photokina or even before.

Even review samples for major magazines are not widely available yet. I've been told 'as soon as possible, but probably months not weeks'.

Cheers,

R.

Ahhh, so the M9 isn't obsolete yet?
There's always good news in bad news :D

As far as I am concerned, the M8/9 are extremely viable tools for image making. They'll be obsolete when they are no longer reparable. I'm sure that someone right now is creatively thinking on how to fit various M240 parts into M8s and M9s to replace those when they cannot be found.

Won't the Leica M Type 241 be announced by then? ;)

I'm waiting for the inevitable special edition dot less version. It's inevitable. I've always had a generic Leica, for once I'd like one of those fancy "stealth" versions. I'm hoping they replace the silver wheel and direction pad with a black version.

personally I think the waiting list is a little overhyped to raise more interest,
last day a local dealer had one in stock, Out of curiosity is asked if I can buy the display model
out of the blue and right now. he said there is one client who will maybe take it, he called him and the client said, after back and forthe he will take it., didn't seem like there were tons waiting for their copy, although the camera seems to sell well, it will soon be available more broadly.

I ordered on Oct. 27 and was surprised when my dealer (saying "my dealer" sounds funny, but hey I AM a rangefinder addict) called and said it was ready to pick up. That was about 10 days ago.

Hi,

While they probably would still sell for more money that would shrink the market. A small market to begin with. One big reason more people buy Canon and Nikon is because more people can afford to. It's a realistic, achievable goal. Regarding Leica, if they simply wanted to cater to their wealthiest clients who value best-in-class and status over money they could do that but once all of them had the crazy-expensive camera their sales would stop. A lower price broadens the base and allows it to be more realistic and achievable for more people and for a longer time. I think that means more sales and more profit in the long term, which is more valuable to the company.

I went to a "Leica Day" at a local shop where the Leica Rep. brought in lenses, etc. and one M.

He said it was the only demonstrator in the US!
When others asked later he kept saying Leica is a small company and there are only so many people available to work. They can't stop making everything else to make more Ms.

People came and went checking it out. I attached my small group of lenses and everything seemed to work.
I recorded some video with my 85mm.

Now I have about 15 months to save up I guess. :)

15 months? jeez.
should be less, though. hoping here I could put my hands on one by september or november. too optimistic?

Our shop has been told to expect 1 every 1 to 1-1/2 months (2 every 3 months on average).
On the plus side (sort of) we only have one, maybe two left on the list right now.
(so far we've had one.)

Leica dealer and guys from Leica said last night they don't really know the projected delay but they guessed 9-12 months in the US. They said if the new Wetzlar facility comes online sooner than expected that would help. As for me, I'm not on any waiting list and have no plans to be. I handled an M240 yesterday and although I'll be happy to own one someday, I'll wait until there are demos/used on the market. I had a few gripes with the M8, but the M9 is exactly what I want: a digital version of the film M. I could care less about video or live view. I like the rangefinder and dislike EVFs and rear-screen viewing. And I use an M for its compactness, so I have no interest in cobbling bulky SLR lenses to it. That's what my Canons are for :)

3 months for me in France. My dealer opened his waiting list in February and i was on the top of it so i should receive my sample in a week or two.
