How many film cameras does one need?

Don't know how many. Thing is- the most amazing equipment is so cheap now compared to what it was. I'll stumble across great equipment that seems almost free. I've really slowed down with that...

There are so many well made cameras selling now for pennies on the dollar...cameras that were considered professional in their day. Ask yourself: when was the last time you bought a high precision machine, made entirely of glass and metal, with lots of intricate parts, for under $100?

My users are : M3, M4, OM2, Mamiya 7, Bronica SQA, Century Graphic 4x5, Polaroid 180
Still 'need' : Xpan, R8, Nikon F

Cheers - John

Well said. Last year I bought a plastic "Bumblebee" transformer for my 2 year old son from Walmart for $45 plus tax; as a comparison I got an excellent Rollei 35S from the bay for $32. Not every Rollei 35S is so cheap but you got the idea.

Started wiith dslr d40. Loved it but took way too many photos and spent my time sorting. Then I got into lomography with the holgas but wanted better camera and lens quality so recently i bought a bessa r3a. Then a thrift shop whom i had given my phone number called to GIVE me 2 60's pentax's. I simply had to pick them up. Then a ZI nettar, an olympus trip, an okaya Lord II. Long story short.....I have been pulled back into film and love it. My dslr sits idle. I now have 9 cameras and a fridge full of film and a scanner( and a print shop 5 blocks from my home). Now I want to try large format....

Currently possessing (or is it the other way round?):
2 x Leica R
1 x Leica M
1 x Minolta SRT
1 x Nikon F2
1 x Yashica Electro GT
1 x Olympus OM1

On wish list:
1 x Canon F1

So far, looks to be at least 30. I have 29, but not a single Nikon. So I'll need at least one of those to complete the set. Gotta catch 'em all.

I have a few different formats, from Minox 8X11, 110, through 35mm to 120 and polaroid. I don't have to worry about 'is my camera loaded with the film I need for that type of shooting', I'll just grab whichever one has the film or features that I need.

Honestly, It's quite hard to stop buying stuff. Especially when browsing Ebay's auctions or a Dutch second-hand site. You'll see one of those great cameras or lenses for prices that are just too good to pass up. I mean... I bought a Zenit 12XP for 1 euro! Paid only 18 for a nice Minox EC. My last pizza was more expensive then my last 50mm Minolta lens. Lens caps are literally a dime-a-dozen on Ebay.

Even the once top-of-the-line from Canon, Nikon etc. go for less then the price of a half-decent compact camera these days.

About the only thing that's still expensive is Leica gear.

I just hit the 15 mark...in the past three months that I've been shooting film. Only two cost me over $100 though.

More than I can use. But I'm going to trim the collection. Almost everything in 135 has to go. And to be good half of the MF should go. On the other hand I might be finding them fun next year...
