I hate this word...

I put an old color picture of my son in the film label holder of my Nikon F2a and when people ask if it's a digital camera I say "Yup" and show them the picture...

Hehe. For one weekend, I'll make my kitty pic with some digital camera like interface on top, put that in the label holder, then put a red dot saying Leica in Katakana on my OM. I'll shoot around a hipster central and see what kind of comments I can get. :D

Mike,

+1 "Sharp."

I have been considering using the word "optical" as opposed to digital...

For instance: optical printing, optical camera

Also considering chemical for the same purpose.

I don't think so..........

I don't think so..........

If we all drove electric cars, we'd talk about "gas cars".

If we all drove "Hybrids" or "Electric -largely digital instrument and control system cars", I think we would be calling fossil fuel cars "Analog" vehicles

"Analog" doesn't bother me at all, it's just the opposite of digital, which is now the norm. Although the term "Chemical" would probably more accurate and in my mind, cooler.

"Lense" on the other hand, is just wanton laziness.

"Wet-print" actually makes more sense to me now because it's broader than darkroom-print. Alternate processes like cyanotype, platinum-palladium, etc. does not require a darkroom, but they are prints all the same.

Well I don't think "optical" is the right word for that. Digital cameras are still "optical cameras" as long as they shoot with lenses.

"chemical printing" might work, but tree huggers will hate you. :p

It was meant to get people's manties in a bunch.

Anyway: both are accurate. Especially when talking about printing.

Hey Cameraleather! How about a replacement piece to fit an M rear door with a picture of a mouse, captioned "Sorry, I ate all the pictures!"

I often pronounce Summicron "Zummicron" and Voigtlander "Foctlender" and some people corrected me "you mean Summicron?" I hate that.

Same goes for Ikon, Zeiss, Nikon and so on. I mean, it's fine to call it whichever you like, but don't think you are always right.

"Analog" adj. employing measurement along scales rather than by numerical counting...Webster's Handy College Dictionary 1981

Although "Analog" may be the correct terminology for the type of photography my film cameras do, ask anyone using the word "Analog" when refering to a camera to define the word...They'll probably say it means "Non-Digital"...

Discrete.

I suspect that most people who say things like: "I am a discrete person" mean exactly that. If you have to say "I am discreet" than you probably are not.

Just think of it that way, and your bugaboo will go away.

I wonder if Larry Burrows and Don McCullin sat in a dug-out at night talking about footprints and signatures, and how their Nikkor H was drawing! :D

Those are both essentially correct... if something isn't analog it's digital, unless it's orthogonal to the whole conversation. An anteater is neither, though it does have digits. And might be considered analog if its digestive track is the measure of the beast... maybe it's both.

Analog or analogue has never bothered me. It's an accurate description and helps to distinguish two very different processes. I've always liked the reference to analog in music, so it works for me. Agree about 'souping'. I've used the word, but just never sounds right. I'm not fond of the word 'soup' anyway (although, I love soup).
