i just might be crazy...

i agree with B2. if i hadn't just weakened and gotten the SA 21/3.4 i've been lust after for so long, i would have jumped on your 25. i think i actually prefer it to the 21/28 ZM for it's unique draw. keep it a while longer!

WOOOHOOOO Cam

How Lovely is that.... Congrats on the SA
must try it if you come by in May

Joe:

I had an RD-1 and liked it; it gave a very film-like response. There are some limitations that you should be aware of though:

1) short rf base-length (spotty accuracy with fast glass (50/1, 75/1.4, 90/2))
2) Noisy ISO 1600
3) Bessa-style build quality/mechanical durability
4) RF accuracy harder to user-adjust than M8
5) small LCD, by today's standards
6) 1.5 crop factor

I had lots of "keepers" from mine, but traded in/up to an M8. IQ on low ISO's is better for my purposes on the M8, but at the sizes I print not that much of an issue.

lest you scare people away (as you already seem to have done)

1) spotty accuracy? i've had no more problems using those lenses other than the normal growing pains. good excuse for missed shots, but more than likely it's user error. i actually found the 75 Lux easier on my R-D1 than the M8.2.
2) not if you expose properly.... i find the 1600 on the R-D1 much more pleasant than high ISO on an M8.
3) true but they seem pretty damn solid
4) not really (R-D1) but no comment on the R-D1S. on the plus side, if it does go out of whack and you're scared to fix it -- Steve's Camera has a much faster turn around than Leica.
5) small? only small? how about pathetic! i agree with you and raise it. then again, it keeps me from chimping :p
6) bigger than the G1's 2X crop factor
and you forgot number seven, which is truly my biggest gripe with the camera -- the shutter is loud enough to wake the dead (it's really the only thing that tempts me toward the M8.2).

the R-D1, most importantly, is the most fun you can in the digital domain if the whole rangefinder experience floats your boat. i love mine -- it has spoiled me.

use it in joy, joe!

Congratulations.I encouraged you in previous threads to get the RD-1 now you have.
In May mine is 3 years old by the dollar exchange to British pounds I paid about the same new back then.Doesn't look like I will afford the second body just yet!

Regards
Steve

PS. you will need one of Luigi's half cases now

it comes with an official rd case!

LOL! using the Noctilux as a walk-around lens the past few weeks drove me to it :D

speaking of which, that brings up a very little discussed danger of the R-D1. did a heave-ho, over the head hip shot today, and the weight of the Nocti slammed the wind lever into my cheek bone. that thing is wicked sharp! no blood but i should have nice bruise tomorrow....

i promise to let you play on both!

joe, i am interested in how much you spent for it. I would like to know the price difference between buying from a dealer and private seller.
Thanks.

price difference will depend on how much the seller is willing to lose on the transaction.

some people got great deals on ebay and paid less than $500.
others paid the full bin price on ebay.

If I were to get one of these Epson RD-1 cameras, somehow, is there anyone these days that can service them? I'm a pro Nikon shooter but really need to return to RF shooting or I'll go bonkers. M8.2 is a little out of reach at the moment, what with young children and all. I'll use it for pro work so it'll need to handle the rigors that go with that.
Cheers,
Paul Treacy

Congratulations! (I still don't understand why everybody didn't hop on the M8 wagon during the recent devalued-pound-plus-cashback extravaganza...)
Now that you've got the R-D1, I can bet that you are going to start wanting new lenses for it.

well done, joe. post some shots when you're up to it.

the camera has a very nice jpg engine, imho, if you're keeping it simple.

i'm hoping my current trio will do well.

I think The Trio will do you well, indeed very well, but in my opinion cameras with a crop factor like that really need a fast 35 or a fast 28.
