Helen, while I've been pushed over the edge, I'm yet to purchase. It has moved to the top of the list, so will no doubt be imminent.

Hi Cris - Mine was originally set to be "on" at f/2.8. I sent it off to DAG for coding and any necessary adjustment. I was content with the f/2.8 because shooting wide open is not a frequent occurrence for me, and it only involves leaning forward a couple centimeters after focusing, or twitching the focus ring to the next DoF setting to be correct. IOW, not a big deal, and I liked the better focus for more frequent settings like f/4 etc.
When it came back from DAG, he had optimized it for about f/2 as best I could tell. That's fine too, and now I don't bother taking any corrective actions with focusing. Some have said this is how it actually is when "optimized for f/1.5," I don't know.
For our 2-weeks in Hawaii last fall, once we picked up the rental car the C-Sonnar was the only lens I used (M240). I can't see any reason to be displeased with the focus as long as I do my part.
In your shoes I'd leave the lens set up for f/2.8, use it, try a couple of methods of correcting focus when at f/1.5 and see what you think from your own experience. Go from there... 🙂

Thanks for the info. The copy I'm looking at is very recent, and based on the f1.5/2.8 comparison shots I've been sent, it looks perfectly fine at f1.5 to me.

I sold my Cron V4 for the Nokton 50/1.5 LTM, thereafter selling the Nokton for the Zeiss. No regrets. Zilch.

You will love it.
I recently got one and was skeptical about the "dreaded focus shift" and the "optimized for 2.8" thing. All of it was a non-issue. Specially since I have the Planar like you. If you need very sharp and accurate use the Planar.
The Sonnar is just wonderful. ƒ1.5 is great as-is. Really nice for portraits. 2.8 is very sharp, and 5.6 is super sharp. AND it's a light, beautiful piece of glass.
Below is a quick snap at ƒ1.5 with a Panasonic 46mm ND filter. It's cropped some, otherwise untouched DNG as Aperture interprets it.

mine is in japan now getting lubricated and optimized to focus at f/1.5. I had to send it in as the focusing action had become a bit stiff, and decided to get it optimized at the same time. the lens is made to be shot wide open, so why not?
