I need feedback from everyone. (Classifieds)

No need. RJ forgot to post the rider that is written with rule 5.

Rule No. 5 - No Self-Promotion
5) You will not post any messages anywhere on this site that are primarily for the promotion or advertising of any website, forums, email address, business, MLM, activity, or other entities that you have an affiliation with (ie. no self-promotion). No exception, additionally Self-Promotion links will no longer be allowed in your signature.

This is intended for commercial establishments that try to advertise on RFF without going through the proper process. Individual members can pretty much ignore this one.

huh. Didn't notice that. I guess I have to fix my sig.

What is MLM?

RJ,
I do wish you would stop misquoting me and trying to put words in my mouth. 😉

In my first post on this thread, I said that although I had benefitted from the classifieds, they were not the main purpose of the forum and that if they started to cause damage then it would be better to delete them. I then went on to discuss ways to prevent them becoming that problem. You commented on this and in post 52, I clarified my statement saying that I was not advocating their removal and that was why I was discussing ways to avoid future problems.

I've thought about Kim Coxon's idea of eliminating all buy/sell ads. I think it's a great idea provided that members can link to their auctions in their signatures.

I'm not talking about links to blogs or galleries. I'm talking about links to eBay sites and websites promoting photography BUSINESSES.

RJ,
Unless you have an affilliation with a particular business or are thinking of starting one, this rule would not apply to you. It says that you have an affiliation with (ie. no self-promotion). As 2 people have pointed out, Jorge goes on to say Individual members can pretty much ignore this one.

Why get upset about a rule that doesn't affect you? 😉

Hey Kim, 🙂

I agree with this:

"There is one simple answer, if the classified are proving to be a problem, then stop them. This is a camera forum not a market place. I know it sounds harsh and I have benefited greatly from both buying and selling on the forum but if it is going to cause damage, it would be better to do without it."

Luigi is a very generous man. He gave back alley a case for his ZI and helped Stuart out when the leather shop ruined his case. It's hard to believe that three RFF members would have the nerve to cheat this man.

RJ,
I thought Luigi said:
R. J. , No, not scams ! And, I was... the BUYER ! 🙂 Nothing terrible, and I don't like to start a public argument.

If you are trying to help him, why publicize something which he has told you he doesn't want argued in public.

Who said I was upset? 😀 Some people have photography businesses that they want to promote. Putting the website's URL in their signature will create referring pages to their website.

Some people sell on eBay as a business activity. One member was selling film here on RFF and he had a link to his website in his signature.

Maybe Jorge needs to clarify this, but it was my understanding that if your photography was a business activity and not a hobby you could not link to it in your signature.

If you read Luigi's first post (#10) he said he was going to leave negative feedback for the three sellers but he was concerned that they would retaliate with bad feedback for him.

I think there should be a dealer emporium. A forum where dealers can tout their stuff. No one has to go read there, but if there are sales and the dealers post good deals, then folks will want to go there.

Also, I am not so familiar with phpBB (this sw), but vBulletin lets you ignore posts by individuals or dealers that you don't want to deal with.

I would also like to not see any topics on religious or political content here. There are many better places for folks to discuss those issues. But I would like to see an off-topic or "pub" forum.

Just my .02 from what I've seen work, and not work in discussion forums with classified sections.

The site runs pretty much along these line. 😉

The dealer emporium is a special section in the classifieds.

You can choose to ignore members posts.

Jorge has always said no politics or religion and the off-topic section is the "and now for something completely different" one.

if it were me...and i say this as a member, not a moderator, go back to the old way of having a classified section of threads that mainly policed itself, at no cost for a posting of any kind. drop the new classified and if a $25. member objects offer him a bigger mailbox or an extra photo upload limit. i doubt many would object.

i think if there are problems now it is because we have created a marketplace and that changes member's expectations.
before we had a community that bought & sold good gear to each other.
i think there is a difference.

Amen to that!!!
Hear hear. Amen, Amon-Ra, Ohmm, and clap clap clap.

May be Jorge is trying to make a point about all the good stuff being sold on the classified section??
True, N. Kiu. Obviously it is a very difficult issue for which there is no easy solution. I don't think anybody has a silver bullet answer.

Not to beat a dead horse with another mega-sized ditto, but I miss the old "FS" threads.

The new way may be preferred by commercial vendors, but the old "FS" threads were part of what made this forum feel like a community.

I miss the "What are you listening to" and "What's in your glass" threads that were in the general discussion forum. When the discussion became too heated in another thread, you could always post in one of those threads and bump it to the top of the list.

My feedback: stop killing threads for no reason.
Where is the $3 million for this!? thread (do a search if you want to see it)...

That was my 2 cents.
Cheers.

When a thread is moved to And now for something completely different
The tag is deleted and the inline images become links. Maybe the thread was moved due to copyright considerations.

R.J.

I don't think it was due to copyright considerations. Whatever it was, it is a shame that as soon as a discussion becomes a little passionate (thus often interesting) it gets hidden.
Do we have to talk about the 50mm focal length, camera bags or wrist straps all the time? (I have nothing against talking about that, but there are other subjects as well).
I mean, it would be nice to mix it with some discussions about photography as well, and even if we strongly disagree, that's fun.

RFF's new classified section has created an attractive marketplace for sellers to offer their gear for sale. The problem is that some sellers are using RFF only for that purpose. They are not contributing members of the site. Some are offering their gear for "best offer", turning RFF classifieds into an ebayish thing. Personally, I don't like this evolution of our classifieds, which began as For Sale threads where members offered other members unwanted gear at very favourable prices.

I think this new classified section is going to begin to cause some problems. There's an MP offered by someone with 0 posts. He is very likely a perfectly honest gentleman, who knows? Peronally, I'd like to see the new classified section disappear, and the FS threads return, making it a less attractive open marketplace to unknown sellers.

This is my personal opinion.

The one thing I like about the new classifieds is the classified pictures at the bottom of the main page. I really liked it when they were ordered by the date they were posted. You could visually see quickly if a new item came up for sale. The randomized images we have now is bad development, in my humble opinion.

I think the "buy it now" and other "advanced" features are not necessary. When I bought via the classified the one thing I did was to look at all the posts by the user to make sure the user was an active member and get a better sense of his/her "character" on RFF.
