If you like match needle TTL metering get the M5 and ignore that one comment warning you not to get it. The other M's are using diodes to indicate exposure.
Yes it's the biggest M film camera, but it's very close to the size of a digital M8.
I have had mine since August 2006 and in honesty the size has taken me a while to get used to. But now I love my M5! Quality and funtionality in one.

One more thing, and this fits in your old age plan...I use new Hearing Aid Batteries size 675 and 1.4 Volts and the meter works perfect.

For the record, below you will find Bigfoot & Bubba. I adopted them last year after waiting for oh so many years. 😎
Where exactly does one find 675 size zinc-air hearing aid batteries? The 675 is smaller than the original 625. Yet it works fine? That is good news. I will search for 675s and give them a try.

When I was to retire in '93, I acquired a Wetzlar M6. I had thought of getting a Leica since collage. A move leaving the darkroom behind has left the M6 sitting without use. With motorcycling taking up most my time, I have thoughts of selling the Leica. Looks like I will be going down the opposite path.

I know this predicament all too well..... Got to a stage in my life where I could afford anything I wanted, so I got that perfect pristine M3 and 50mm 'Cron from the year I was born, and then realized it wasn't the one-true-path-to-photographic-immortality after about 30 rolls, then got real guilty about leaving the beauty at home, and after being roasted as an idiot in this forum for selling it on consignment for half of what it was worth (just hoping SOMEBODY might use it (really nice camera, you see), I find myself wanting another -- maybe a M6 Classic?

I got my first Leica 2 weeks ago. I'm 21. To me, it's an "investment" - I plan to keep the system for life. Get a Leica while you're ahead, while you can still use and enjoy it.
I've used digital point and shoots in the past and none have lasted longer than 2 years before I felt the need to upgrade or it simply broke down from heavy use. The M8 will never be a traditional 'classic Leica.' Heck, I predict that it will be less than 2 or 3 years before it's replaced with another digital M.
Stick with a mechanical body. The M3, M2, M4, M6, or MP are all good choices but if you have the funds, I suggest an A La Carte MP in black w classic engravings and vulcanite covering. It will be a 'legacy' camera that you can pass down.

I have only a humble but lovely IIIf, purchased here.
These small jewels have their own special charms & virtues
and shouldn't be overlooked; a nice place to start.
Of real concern however is the motorcycle business.
My own back is shot so I understand your pain & concern but
only you can decide you shouldn't have a bike.
My Bonneville is tangerine on white with gold pinstripe.
It almost justifies my miserable, futile, insignificant existence.

I'll go against the grain and ask you to consider an M8. It's the real deal, despite what you might hear. If nothing else, it's the most satisfying digital camera on the market. It's also built to last, unlike most plastic DSLR prosumer gear at the same price point.
When I was in my late teens I found a IIIg in the basement of a house my family moved into. The shutter was broken, so I had it sent to Solms and repaired. I learned how to shoot on it, despite having to laboriously load the film onto a spool while my friends' EOS Elans were motor-driving away at 10fps or whatever. The point is that I went to great lengths to revive and use this old Leica because it was obvious to me, even at that age and with almost no knowledge of Leica's heritage, that it was something special and worth the effort.
Spend the rest of your money on great lenses, because M-Mount lenses are what your grandchildren will really want to inherit. Just my opinion...

If I were in your shoes, I would either go for a mint M3 DS with a matching chrome 50 Summicron or an MP with a 35mm 1.4 Aspheric.

Like others have mentioned, a few years back I discovered that I owned a lot of compromise equipment, and selling some off allowed me to come back into the Leica fold.
My personal pie-in-the-sky equipment wish list if money were no object: a pair of black .72 MP3 bodies with Leicavits and my choice of framelines, 28 Cron, 35 Cron, 50 Noct, 75 Cron and 90 Cron. And you know, I might just end up there about ten minutes before I expire!
