Images from the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami

Katrina is the same way here too. 😡😡😡

Very true, however the Katrina wasn't even a drop in the bucket compared to this disaster in Japan, of course no disrespect to those who lost their lives and/or belongings in Katrina. There is absolute obliteration for more than 500km with severe damage being dealt to the infrastructure inland at least 50km+. The death toll is over 25,000 in Japan while Katrina was roughly 1/5th of that. Of course both were tragic, but this disaster in Japan wasn't regional it was a national disaster. These reactors supplied massive amounts of electricity. As of two weeks ago Tokyo is like a shell of it's former self. Almost no one on the streets, lights out everywhere, etc. It's much easier to forget about Katrina for those of us not directly affected specifically because it was so regional. I'm not justifying forgetting Katrina, just saying that Katrina does not measure on the scale of this disaster.

I read somewhere in this forum that photography is banned in Tsunami hit areas because of disaster tourists. How did you manage to take these photos?

Photography and sightseeing has been prohibited for people participating in the volunteer programs that have started just now at the so-called Golden Week. It was announced in TV last week.

As Nate mentioned, it is officially not easy to prohibit photography in Japan and officials in the areas are busy helping people or organizing support.

Nate, good work !

Wow. Thanks for posting as I find your photos intriguing. Here in the US, the media has all but quit reporting on the situation in Japan.😕

Please keep us updated.🙂

Stunning shots! Especially the xpan ones.....
Comming from Scandinavia which is a pretty quiet area regarding natural disasters, for me this is nothing short of surreal.
I cannot even begin to try to understand what they are going through atm.
Wierd thing is, I was in Japan three months ago.....and now this.

Nate, amazing images. Every single one of them. I couldn't help notice the irony of this one. The characters above the entrance read "Minami Sanriku (the "cho" meaning village is missing) Natural Environment Utilization Center" 😱

Jon, that building was full of wet suits, test equipment, microscopes, etc. All completely destroyed. Thanks for pointing out the cho was missing.

Did you speak to the guy in the 3rd shot? What was his story...

There was a couple off small trembllers last night here in Yokohama and again this morning.

Wow, powerful images. In the abstract, it is hard to imagine such damage and with the images, it is hard to imagine the process needed to get back to some sense or normalcy.
