...why it is cool to work with cool people!

So, I went in to work a bit late today and when I got there my office door was unlocked - strange - when I opened the the door the light was on - stranger still (the lights have motion detectors and stay on for a set time after sensing motion), and sitting on my desk chair was a camera (in a erc), and a ammo box. 😕 . OK, to pick up the pace here, a woman I work with (who is really just a couple years older - just in case she reads this!), and had spoken to about my interest in photography/cameras, came across her dad's old Minolta XG-1 kit and decided to give it to me. How cool is that? The camera has a 50 Rokkor-X f1.7 on it, and in the box is another 50 that appears to never have been used - a MD f1.7. I don't know anything about these so I'm not sure what the difference is between the two. Then, in a hard leather case is a Tamron SP 2.5 90! all of the lenses have Hoya HMC filters that appear to have been on since out of the box. Man these are nice filters - I have some Hoyas but they are not near as nice as these. The 90 has a Minolta adapter on it that looks brand new, and there is also a 3 piece Hoya close up filter set - along with I think 4 more of the HMC filters in cases (skylight and so on) But wait, there's more! There is also a way cool Minolta 55mm screw on lens hood (almost no flare to it - the GSN likes it 😀 ) And then lastly a couple of flash accessories - one I understand, it allows you to swivel your shoe mounted flash - but there is also a part that has a sensor that clamps to the front of the lens with a cord going to your flash 😕 . Anyway, there are some other bits also but the amazing thing is all the glass is like new. wow. OK, I'm done, I know this is not a classic or big $ kit, but still a pretty neat surprise and I just wanted to share my excitement - thanks for listening and sorry about the long post.

You got that right Jocko - but I have always been a ardent fan of women! If I had taken the time to read the box I took it out of I would have known it was a macro flash Dave 😀 , don't know how to use it - but I guess that is what the directions are for...the 90 sure looks nice Joe - talk about a solid piece of machinery! And yes, the hugs have been given but I think lunch may also be in order! Did I mention that all the caps, invoices, warranty cards etc are here also? Amazing

That is very cool. I have one of the MD1.7 lenses as well and its a good piece of glass.

It reminds of what my sister in law did for me about two years ago. My wife had mentioned to her that I was getting back into photography somewhat and I was shooting a lot when I took weekend motorcycle rides. She said she had just gotten a Nikon digital and had her old 35mm camera just sitting around gathering dust. Would I be interested in it? If so she would mail it to me. My wife knows nothing about cameras and couldn't tell me what camera her sister had. I told her,"Sure, I would like another 35mm. Send it along and thanks". She (my sister in law) did and I was happily surprised to see a very nice Pentax K-1000 with a set of close up filters and a few extra filters, soft case and strap when I opened the box.

My wife uses it on the rare occasion when she wants to photograph something which is why I don't list in my gear collection. I have not seen it in a year or so. 🙄

How cool! Yes, the Tamron 2.5 SP is a very good lens. SPs are the top of the Tamron line, and IIRC, the 90 is darn fine. I haven't owned or used one, but several folks on the OM list have/had it and really liked it.

I have done rather extensive testing on the various macro type lenses..
The tamron 90mm/2.5 is a very good lens, but the Tamron 90mm/2.8 is much better. I rated this one on par with the Minolta 100mm/2.8 macro (one of the best)

The Tamron is better then the Canon 100mm/2.8....

You are a lucky man to have so generous a co-worker and friend in your life. I would love to find a pristine Tamron 90mm for my X-G1/X-700/XD-11. Shoot away and enjoy your blessings. Luke

The Minolta X cameras are par with the Pentax K in durability and reliability. I speak as a former owner of one, which was my re-initiation into photography. Even though, unlike the Pentax K, some are battery dependent (shutter is electronic), the X you got is probably a spiritual sister to the Pentax K (which only used the battery to feed the meter).

As for the glass... it's excellent stuff. Oddly enough, had I kept my Minolta system I would have such a big set of lenses... They have come down in price, but not in quality.

Congratulations on your new acquisition and on having such a very nice co-worker! 🙂

Thanks for all the info guys, and trust me - something very nice is coming her way - just have to figure out the best way to say thank you! OK, this is embarrassing but what the hell.. due to my SLR ignorance, till reading your responses here I was really most exited about the filters! Man are they nice - I guess Hoya must have different "grades" of filters because my others are not even close to this quality. I do hope to be able to do some justice to the Tamron also, but I have a long way to go 😱

Okay, that does it. I was kind of undecided for awhile, but this thread has won me over. I vote that we continue to [occasionally] mingle with the women-folk. Especially when they give us stuff. 😉

congrats & enjoy, scott!

I would say use the camera and make some prints as a gift is a better idea. After all, that's what a camera is for, right?

Good luck with everything. It sounds like a good start.

My first gf was nearly 12 years older than me (although she looked younger than me by at least 5 years). In keeping the forum g-rated, I will simply join in the praise of "older" women  😀 😎
