The 'keyway' or notch on the shutter speed dial is where the coupling pin from a Leica meter should fit. The meter then gives an f-stop related to your shutter speed. Opinions about these meters vary greatly.

You can also consider the new Zeiss ZM 50mm. It's as good as the summicron and is onl $600 new, with 2 years of warranty. You can't beat it.

I got an email off to KajF, and will work on getting a Summicron 50 for my M3.
In the mean time I posted 5 of my silly pictures of the Lens-less M3 in my gallery, and some things that can be done with an empty M3. (13 more, but will stick to the 5 limit , delete them add more after a while. they are only "play" shots.
Kind of going along with the "take your camera to coffee" theme on one of the threads.
