Industar 50 question

Nice lens except for it's tendancy to flare at any reflection, (no suprise being uncoated). So does anyone know the filter thread size, (32mm?) so I can get an adapter for a lens hood.

The collapsible version doesn't have filter threads, so you need an A36 clamp on hood like the Leitz Fison or a series VI equivalent with a 36mm push-on ring. Some FSU dealers like alex-photo sell a push on metal or plastic hood. All these options should work on the I-10, I-22 and 1-50/rigid I-50.

AFAIK the rigid black I-50 is the last version with coating, so Daniel is right. If you shine a light source on the front element it should give a purplish tint uncoated lenses are clear.

The filter thread size of the rigid Industar 50 is 33mm. I don't know where you can find a filter this size these days. My Industar 50 also exhibits flare from bright reflections and it certainly is coated.

There are only very slight cleaning marks Daniel. Reexamining the photos I noticed that a couple were shot shot towards the sun with NO flare. The ones that show flare were of a highly reflective chrome surface. Maybe I need to better adjust my f stop (to compensate) for this.

Kurt M. is right. The filter size of your I-50 is 33mm. What you would have to do is to buy a 33mm-??mm step up ring in order to mount filters or a lens hood.

Sounds good, will I need to remove it to change the f stop since the adjustment ring is at the very end of the barrel?

You don't need to remove the step up ring, filter, or lens hood. On the rigid I-50 I had, I changed the f stop by turning the lens hood. Then again, the f stop adjustment ring was a little loose and sloppy.

Check out this link. I have a pic of the I-50 with a 33-37mm step up ring and a 37mm lens hood. I got both items from *bay.

Oops, I just noticed you said ALL Industar lenses were coated. Maybe it's not an Industar or I'm not seeing the coating?

All Industar 50 were coated- they were introduced in an era when all lenses were already coated. That black I-50 is already coated- though its coating may not be as obvious.

In the times when coating was new, up till perhaps the early 1960s, Soviet lenses were marked with a red "П" to note that the lens was coated. Just like what Zeiss did when they put red "T" on their lens's ID rings. 🙂

The white aluminium I-50 really qualifies (if it isn't yet) for the title 'ugliest' lens on the planet. It could be jazzed up a bit to make it more tolerable 😀

Lens hoods are really effective. You can make them in a pinch if you can't find any to fit your lens. See bottom of this page:

Daniel, Looking at yours and other members photos taken with FSU lenses I can see how their lens designs were based on Leitz and Zeiss design. However the results are I think are distinct, different. Maybe it's only my imagination but I really that unique FSU look.
Reagan warned me that FSU gear was addictive when I got my FED2. I should have listened to him, now I'm looking for a Jupitar8.
