Interesting opinions about RFF

I think Frank meant the comments on the thread here originally - not the comments on Chris's blog....
NO
You are wrong....Chris has been involved!
I left a reply on his Blog too, only to be deleted.
Raining on parades is not an option there although one is allowed to use foul language.
Let me tell you people my take:
Stephen was the one who posted the matter:
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27399
Read the last paragraph and then read between the lines😉
What does it say???
NOT enough participants to make it interesting(meaningfull)?
Limited number of bloggers on the devious site?
Inviting participants??
Recruting???
Thats my take😉
May be I am wrong but my reply to the blog was not!
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I can't even begin to understand what you are trying to say.

I missed this whole thing. Must have been out shooting. I remember Chris Weeks from the Leica Forum and all those flare ups with the "Fly-Guy". He always seemed to be the level headed one on that board. The deviant art thing is just different. I tried to get into it but did not like all the anime stuff (nobody tell my daughter!) This thing about Ben... and Chris.... whatever man. I like the work that they both have out.

Suggestion: (say all this with a really bad southern drawl) Treat the offending parties like witches.... put them in a big tub of water. If they float then they are EVIL and ban them quick. Now if they drown then they was probrably OK and don't talk bad about them.

That's funny, I wonder whatever happened to Fly Guy. He used to post some really provacative pictures.

A nod and a wink guys... I've been away for a while - hanging out with my 13 year old who just returned to Chicago, rebuilding a bike and chilling in general.

I had a chance to read the blog but not the pdf. Whole thing seems silly really. I figure if you're a pro you take your critisism and move on. If you're an amateur you have to do pretty much the same or your feelings get hurt.

Its fascinating that he chose to enliven his blog with snippets of RFF comments. It just supports my belief that blogs are a lot like kiss-and-tell. Those who tell don't seem to care that the rest of us feel like its all TMI.

Hi to all from one of the "kitty avatars."

I would welcome free PDFs of those works. Please supply a link for the downloads. That would be of interest ot me. Others may be interested in parsimonious quibbling about who is an expert--I was merely erring on the side of generosity.

Matthew - not pdf's but good enough:

http://jamesnachtwey.com/

http://www.e-photobooks.com/cartier-bresson/decisive-moment.html

I have just been doing some catching up on these simultaneous threads, and I appreciate the link to the pdf download. It certainly was generous of Chris to provide free access to what was obviously a product of many hours of hard work, especially in this day of "pay-per-view" reviews and newsletters. Frankly, I'd have been happy to pay for this pdf.

I thought the photos were great. As RayPA said, the writing was a bit rough, and opinionated. But the guy knows what he is talking about, and is not afraid to say it his way.

About his "less than classy" personal attacks, I think these were just a knee-jerk reaction to unsolicited criticism to something he worked hard on and is offering free-of-charge to everyone, to enjoy, benefit from, or take with a grain of salt. 'Nuff said. May have been better with a bit more subtlety, though.

As to Deviant Art, which I had not heard of before tonight, they do have some excellent street photos. Different community, though - much younger members I would think. What is the mean age on RFF, after all, 50? For all the crass language, it is nice that there is a creative community for the younger crowd considering the alternatives out there. After all, we are all enjoying the same passion.

And Frank Granovski. By the way, his "poo" site is scary, in a mental way.

Well I guess I'll throw in my .02. Like his PDF it won't actually cost you anything and you can just ignore it if you like.

From what I've read of it so far I think it's a pretty interesting take on the subject. I also agree with those that would say it's a pretty generous (keep in mind folks it's free) thing he has done in compiling all that knowledge in (my opinion again) what appears to be an effort to promote and teach a style he is passionate about. I can't see anything wrong in that.

I also agree that the venom on his blog seems a little childish and immature. I guess that should be expected since he's used to everyone kissing his *** and stroking his ego over there. I guess he's a younger fellow (judging by some of the comments) and young (or immature) minds often can't handle critism.

I tried to read the PDF but it was peppered with expletives. Expletives used as adjectives just leave me bemused. It's as if something powerful is trying to be expressed but the writer just can't get it out. It was too frustrating to read and he doesn't sound like my kind of guy, so I just looked at the pictures. Some were OK.

As for the attack on RFF members, well I'd say there's no reason to feel we need to defend ourselves. RFF has its merits, and many of the members he rubbished give a lot to our community (albeit not huge PDF files).

Matthew,

You may have taken my playful nudge in the wrong spirit, in any event, your wish is my command 🙂

Free and generously given ... here they are:

www.viiphoto.com

Nachtwey, Kratochvil, Haviv, Knight, Eugene Richards, Ladefoged, et al.

www.magnumphotos.com

The last site is where HCB, Koudelka, Depardon et al. reside .... at last count, roughly 50+ members of 'experts', and some of them even manage to shoot commercial celebrity shots in addition to being recognized experts on street photography and spitting expletives 😉 In particular, check out Christopher Anderson's work. He is a very talented new Magnum member (previously of VII) with a keen eye for street reportage.

And as a last resort in this day and age, there is always the local public library, where 'links' for free PDFs for these photographers' works are easily found. Although these PDFs are in analog form, so one needs to download them the old fashioned way, in a chair, with a book in hand, and a cup of java at your side 😉

Alternately, under the concept that some things of value require value (or copyright) ... one can rent War Photographer or HCB's The Impassioned Eye and give Nachtwey and HCB their well-deserved royalty for risking their lives to get us the photos. Or try Amazon.

Or, again, free at the public library as well.

Cheers, Matthew. My comment wasn't a dig at you, just a nodge in the direction of some generally recognized experts, most of them with talent and grace ... qualities that need not be contradictory in an artist, photographer, nor for that matter, in a human.

regards

Yo ... mate ... Pete ... just stop talking like a sanctimonious little tosser!
😀 😀 😀
I'm talking like your master, hope you appreciate the tribute!
BTW, try to spell words correctly.
Best,
Marc

Give him a break Marc. Look at some of the venom on his own blog and understand it's not fair picking on those at a disadvantage.🙁

you pepole are so anal its unbelevable.

here is a guy that wrights (with a few others) 160 pages of pdf on street photograhy complete with his own oppinion and photos along with those of the other authors and gives it away for free.

how often do you find that?

not often is the awncer.

I will wright something unbelevable kool as well. Full of awncers.

I understand that PeteB may have opened himself up for some of these stabs, but isnt this the same thing you guys are complaining about, that someone else did? Just my .02

What is all the fuss about anyway? People getting all fired up about something from the past that really did not matter in the great big photographic world anyway. Some day I am going to have to learn all about that social interaction stuff.

I'm leaving the school yard for a little while to go take some crappy pictures in Boston. Ya'll play nice now.😛

Let's clarify things.

Let's clarify things.

Actually they are complaining about Pete. He was complaining about the complaints made concerning the other complaints (other place) about the original complaints which leads us to this post of yours which is (my opinion) actually a 4th or 5th party complaint to which I must now make a 5th or 6th party complaint myself unless your comment was indeed an actual comment (or question?) and not a subtle complaint concerning possibly the complaints of the 3rd and 5th party complaints simulataneously.
