Is it true, still? M3 the greatest?

I always assumed it was just the beta version, then they put in a proper finder and got rid of the Georgian windows for the M2, which are as we know perfect.

Of course it could only go downhill from there ...

in my definition of gadget the greatest has to be .........my goggled Summicron....now that is a gadget that eloquently solves one of life's big problems and really dresses up a M3

Not really, that was a problem solved by the M2

M3+M2 - No need for M5

Surely M2 + M3 = 2M5 + ½mv²

Seriously, this poll(?) was votes from people who don't probably own one. If you look at the sales figures then it's got to be something like the Olympus µ range of the FED/Zorki or what? Those examples were off the top of my head but sales went into tens of millions. And a vote with your own money is quality vote...

Actually, an M3 is more versatile than an M2. M2 can't use a 135mm, an M3 can use a 35 (either goggled or with slip-on finder).

And for wider than 28mm, the M3 beats all other Leicas ever made...

So unless you really want a 28mm or 35mm, the M3 really is the best Leica...

It's certainly a great camera but it it the "greatest"?

I'd go as far as to say it's the best camera Leica has made in the 35mm format.
But it's a very close thing. All Ms including the M5 are great cameras to use.
Beautifully made and to die for but to compare them to the latest gadgetry is very unfair.

Next time you have your classic M in your hands try and imagine what the world was like when that camera was brand new and sitting on the shelf of a camera shop.
I think of trips to the moon and cars with carburetors. No personal computers or the internet.
No mobile phones. No "Apple" or "Microsoft"... IBM much smaller than it is today. The Vietnam war. My parents when they were young...
And me because I was a baby. :D

Unfortunate a lot of the older Ms are suffering from neglect and age.
They really need to be fed film on a regular basis.
I can't imagine what's happening to all of the older Ms sitting in collections not being used. Such a shame really.

So decide which M is best for you. (That may not be a Leica at all)
Buy some film and go out and take some pictures. And most of all... Have fun doing so. :)

... the lack of 135 framelines is another feature where the M2 comes out on top ... after all they only put them in the M3 as a joke :D

How did this thread turn around from it being the best gadget of all time - to "is it the best Leica M?"

I can think of hundreds of gadgets far more impressive, even in terms of other cameras. In fact as far as gadgetry is concerned, an auto focusing, auto winding p&s camera is far more 'impressive'. I mean common, the M3 wasn't even the first camera ever made, even the first 35mm camera ever made... I say whatever.

The M3 is an awesome camera if you like 50mm and 90mm lenses (I happen to love both) and if I am going out for the day with one lens and one body, and the lens happens to be a 50mm, then it's the M3 for sure.... but I think it's not "the greatest" camera for everybody....we all have our different preferences....

When I want to use my 35mm, then my M2 is the one that I go for....that said, I have used my 35mm on my M3 and it works, but I prefer the m2 for 35mm.....

As far as looks go, I think the M3 is the best looking M out there....I am a big fan of the frame windows and the over all look of the camera...but we all know stuff that doesn't really matter...:p:D

cheers, michael

p.s. ...I really want an mp3.....that's my "perfect" camera

Gosh!

I don't know about "best gadget" (whatever that means) but conceptually the M3 has to be hugely significant

Think about this. If there wasn't the M3, there wouldn't have been the M2, M4, M5, M6, M7, MP, M8, M9.......

M3 has gotta be it.

Beautiful classic design... all of the products mentioned are great designs. All take one of each please...

Yeah, I think of these everytime I try to have a conversation with my son and he has that damned blackberry/smart phone POS in his hand and stares at it whilst pretending to care what I am saying... I used to get angry and just jump in the TD and leave but had to sell the TD. So now I just pull the M3 out of the bag and stare at it for spite!:) Checkmate.

The wheel and axle has to rank right up there for best gaget of all time as well. :)

You forgot the hammer and spoon.

Wheel, Hammer, Spoon and M3. What else does a man need?

(I know, I know.... Tri-X and D-76.... work with me....)
