It's official, it is goin to be a digital Pen

That might be true! I just can't wait to get one. I'm itching and I need the scratch haha. Been waiting for this for a long time.

I think the front shot looks pretty cool! It's a winner in the aesthetics dept to me. The latest rumor over on 43rumors.com is that the kit lens is a 14-42mm f3.5-5.6, which is a little disappointing at the alleged pricepoint. I'd rather that pancake 2.8 that's been floating around the rumor mill.

isn't there another rumor of a more "pro" 2nd body version of m43 coming from Olympus later this year? So does that mean a totally different camera or just the same one in black ;-)

that 14-42mm kit lens is 4cm long. Talk about amazingly small.

I'd bet the 17mm f2.8 will come as a kit as well - they did it with the e-420 and 25mm f2.8 pancake...

As much as I like primes, I'd probably get the EP-1 + 14-42 kit anyway. It'd be the best way to get to 28mm equiv. on the wide end. Even the 15/4.5 Heliar won't get you quite as wide and it's slower and lacks AF.

Anyone know if this thing is supposed to have HD video (or any video) capabilities? I used to think video was useless but I found myself using it quite a few times on my last trip.

If I get both in the kit, then it's a done deal. That would be seriously awesome. And you're right, that's ridiculously small.

The gap between full format and 4/3 is still significant. The gap between APS-C and 4/3 is not so much, to the point where they're comparable. Any of them is MUCH better than your typical P&S sensor.

Everyone happy now? ;)

I have heard it said that in the digital realm, 4/3rds is the new 35mm; full frame is the new medium format; and medium format is the new large format. Does that pecking order make sense? It does to me.

/T

Until 4/3's becomes the dominant format, replacing APS-C, I'm not sure it can be called the "new" anything. We're not just early adopters, we're pre-adopters! ;)

Supposedly yes, with stereo mics on the front of the camera.

The clamshell model -- also known as the Digital XA:)

Actually, ever since this Pen started to become semi-official with the Pen history campaign, I've been trying to imagine what a Digital XA would be. I'm sadly having a difficult time imaging a camera that would be state of the art, worthy of the name, and marketable all at once.

Seems a fixed lens m43rds with optical viewfinder made absolutely as small as possible would fit the same niche.

That's certainly close. But why use that sensor? Just because you're buying them already for other cameras? I guess so. Fixed lens would frustrate many potential users on one end of the spectrum, and the lack of a coupled rangefinder would frustrate users on the other end. Capturing both ends would be impossible, it seems, and I imagine the zoom lens, no coupling crowd would win out from sheer numbers. Then you have a rather bland camera, unless they find some way to doll it up.

Well, I pretty much agree with you there. I think the 4/3 standard is deeply flawed in a number of ways, because the cameras aren't radically smaller at all. This, however, is. I wouldn't trade my d700 for anything for important work, I just want a camera for the rest of the time.

I wish I shared your optimism regarding future dRF development. I'm skeptical in the first place that we'll get a fullframe dRF that soon; in the second place that Leica or Zeiss will deliver a sensor as strong as the Nikons (Zeiss, with Sony, might); and in the third place that such an item would be remotely affordable for me. The $3000 d700 was pretty much my limit; add the $3000 premium for full frame to the $4000 premium for dRF, and we might not get a full $7000, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were that or higher. Great for those that can afford it, that just isn't me.

I agree! I would love something nice that I could bring with me everywhere. Right now that is my yashica 35 GSN with some 400 iso film. Not a perfect solution in a digital world though. I suspect that at least the leica full frame dRF will be very ,very expensive. I'm having some futile hopes that the zeiss one, if it comes, will be less so.
