I've noticed an imbalance on RFF

I hear you and feel similarly. I tried to find another forum to hang out at, but the 2 that I tried (Nelsonfoto and CameraCollector) jsut don't have the traffic to keep them interesting. Then I figured, why punish myself, and I started back here.

Well, I can't imagine any other place I'd rather be online than here on RFF. I've visited other sites, but they lack the thing that RFF has in spades. WHo knows what that is, but it is what draws most of us here and keeps us here.

I just think it would be nice to have more events on RFF. More things to keep our minds on what counts. Little contests - or just dares from members. Kind of like assignments, but in a totally non-school sort of way. That would, I think, add a little meat to things. Some theme that would get people to shoot for the love of shooting instead of to win some $2000 camera. Something that would draw some conversation that reaches a little deeper.

If I knew what that was, it would be great. But I don't. So, really, I'm just talking out of my armpits.

Here is an idea : some object or concept seen in different ways and places from around the RFF world. We all like coffee. Coffee shops around the world. That is maybe kind of primative. But that's a start.

Some idea that would really harness the diversity and numbers here on RFF.

The Monthly Photo Projects are good. I just spent some time in there and am going to try and shoot for that June topic.

Wtl, thanks for help to know the meaning.

Beniliam, you are most welcome. And every word you said makes so much sense to me. It's refreshing.

Some very poetic images in your folder. Big A+.

You should come over to photo.net "Street and Documentary" forum to play with us. Currently there are some nice displays there.

I am also trying to remind myself what needs to be done. 🙂

oh, yeah, i forgot we are here to talk about gears, endlessly, repeatly, more the better...my bad.

you don't post often but you do post rude...

please tell me what attracts you to this site?
if it is merely to mock others then i suggest you play elsewhere.

why bill, why?

is it time to give me grief again? my turn? can't sleep? what?

there is no redeeming qualities in being rude no matter what your too smart for you brain thinks.
a double edge sword still cuts.

That's really a two-part question, Joe. The first part is 'why'? Since time immemorial, man has asked himself 'why'. And many are the philosophers, scientists, and religious types who have ruined their minds trying to figure this out. So let's leave that for now.

The second part of the question is "Is it time to give me grief again?" Yes.

Ah, but does a double-edged sword maintain a keen sharpness when soaked in rum for a fortnight? I think not, and therefore, I give you a potato.

I will stop now.

The imbalance isn't between the 'art' talk and the gear talk.

It's between expansionary accomodation and wanting to make RFF the place you want it to be.

clarence,
i need an interpretation on this one, sorry.

Ooh, ooh, can I, can I?

He means that some folks want to make the joint more accomodating to all who visit, make it grow to harbor folks of all persuasions. Others want to exclude everyone and everything except what they personally want to see. The eternal struggle. Man versus machine. Shoes in the cogs. And I think there's some zeitgeist in there somewhere as well. Fun stuff.

Quite simply, we all would be best to not make any expansionary accommodations or feel any wanting to make RFF anything.

This is easy, let it be what it is and participate to the degree you wish to, but don't attempt to impose your will on anyone else.

Gear talk is great,
Art talk is wonderful,
the Gallery is full of incredible images
If you can't find a place here, .....

OK, my US$0.02...

In the end, it doesn't matter to me if we talk about gear, art, philosophy, or green-eyed red-haired Scottish lassies. I was attracted by the gallery, signed on to learn about gear and technique, and I now stay for the people.

I've watched the topics ebb and flow over the last couple of years. We have times where we talk more about gear, times where we talk more about technique and art, and times where we just talk about nothing in particular. Works for me.

To bad so many members want it to be something it cannot be. I wanted it to be a place where members can have different values and still respect each other.

I didn't mean to start this mess. I just wanted to observe, from a very opinionated perspective, that our discussions are predominantly gear related. For all the flow of such conversation, there isn't that much going on in the more substantial portions of the forum (only my opinion). There is actually more of that breed of thinking and talking on RFF than I've seen anywhere else. Ever. So, I would never complain, but would only greedily ask for MORE!

I liked the contest because it gave the forum as a whole a unifying motivation to go out and use all the gear we love so much. I think my point in the beginning (muddled by late night writing) is that more events (without the prizes) would be great. The Monthly Photo Projects are fantastic - and I never really even looked in there before till today after reading someone's note.

I like the gear orientated side of this site. There many other places on the web you can show photos and get (hopefully) constructive criticism but there's very few that you can turn to if you have a sticking shutter on your Kiev.
People on here have always been so helpful and friendly which maybe is a reason that you're not going to get lots of comments on your photos here.
Maybe everyone is too nice?

If you have a question about the operation or maintenance of your camera you can usually get quick answer here on RFF.

So it was you who started this? 🙂

Ho shutterflower, I am not much older than you, but for sure not as young. So in my most friendly way, my opinion is that changing human behaviour, wether it is your companion, son, friend, neighbour or RFF members is of the most complex issues of Nature. Achievable, but complex.

The little you can do about it, as I happened to learn so far, works via personal example. Therefore start opening threads of your like, without being deterred if you get less than expected replays, and continue hammering with your own.

I do trust RFF members will like it and many follow suit, sooner or lateer. Don't castigate the negative, but kill it efficiently through showing and enhancing the positive.

Cheers,
Ruben

Brilliant post!

I think from now on, I'll just put my camera where my mouth is.

Time for yet another Avatar mutation.
