I liked the vids I watched a lot. He's obviously an experienced photog with some good stuff to say. He's opinionated, but so what -- so are a lot of us. He's giving his knowledge away for free on youtube. I think it rocks.
I immediately recognized his photo of Richard Thompson. His other shots are very good, too. Glad this was posted on RFF. Great stuff.

Trying to be Ken Rockwell only Ken is amusing.
So much hate for Ken. Poor Ken.
Middle aged guy with a know-it-all attitude towards photography, isn't that pretty much the stereotype of typical amateur photographer these days?
Its easy to burst his bubble and make it clear that his out of touch and out dated but that's kind of cruel. Let him carry on in his little bubble.
Whoa whoa whoa. An amateur? This man has a photo of two men holding hands in TEXAS in the EIGHTIES! I think it goes without saying that anyone with that in their portfolio is a professional. Also, he has a Youtube channel. They don't just give those to anybody.

Who is roger and why would anyone care about his opinion anyway?Hey ... Roger insults DSLR's at every opportunity, and if the opportunity isn't there he'll create it!
Do we DSLR owners get our knickers in a twist?
Never!
Keep going people this is getting quite amusing.
Now I need to check the youtube comments!

This guy is absolutely right about learning your tools. The film guy should also learn his tools. The quality of the film, especially the sound is soooo bad. Not a good advertisement for Mr. Free

All cameras are toys.
uh, i beg to differ.
as per John Free... bravo John for organizing the workshops and your youtube channel. pulling things together and getting them out there into the interwebs/world is a feat in itself. something tells me i would end up liking the cat however i shudder whenever folks use terms like 'real camera'.

where exactly did i say he teaches photography? whence the assumption he should?

I just assumed that when you said
you were referring to him teaching photography. He's an instructor--and a good one, too. He's clear and concise, brief and to the point. His statements are memorable. His students produce better pictures after meeting him.

Because one is a good teacher, it doesn't mean one is right.
You may have all the knowledge in the world, and be the worst teacher. You can be wise, and yet make mistakes. You can be rich, and yet never be able to acquire good taste.
Opinions about opinions are...well, as valid as each other, methinks.

Ah! But did he say it? You can say go dip in the lake, but avoid responsibility for getting wet: "I did not say go get wet, I only said go dip in that water over there"

The use of "say" in italics was enough to blow my mind away Gabriel, it made me realize that this is the internet and that we are not really 'saying' anything are we?

Yea, a bit of ranting going on in that video, could've done away with that, just saw this man now for the first time and I got to say, ranting about little stuff aside, his pictues are gorgeous! And that is what matters, credits where credit is due.

lessee... how many rangefinder knights in shining chrome armour would it take to put one word in vilk's mouth (though granted, the discovery would not advance the discussion one inch)

As many cheap japanese SLR knights in shining silver armor it would to insinuate the words not uttered and inferred by the others.
All while the lake plungers dry out.

viral marketing ( on a small scale). Just a put up a youtube video and before you know it people on web forums are talking about you. Even bad publicity is good for getting your name known.

I agree. The first part of the rant makes sense. And in my opinion, it would be nice to have DSLRs with manual controls for aperture, shutter speed and ISO. A design where you can change everything by feel with your eye kept to the viewfinder. With the display inside your viewfinder, all your setting changes are verified with out checking the lcd.Not a bad take on street photography, if ask me. Concentrate on the subject. Know your gear, Keep it simple. Practice your technique everyday. Avoid chimping...OO
As far as the dig on rangefinder's, he is entitled to his opinion.
I also agree he has a right to express his opinion about rangefinders. However, I don't get the comment about focus. Does the man not understand what the focus patch seen in the VF is for?

Not as much as some people complaining that its "major design flaw" is the lack of an electronic focus confirmation, and the pointing out of how ridiculous that point of view is means you are making excuses for not wanting to move onto the 21st century.

How come no one ever used the term "Chimping" for view cameras?
Out chimping with your Century Graphic....
Brian,
You don't chimp with a view camera, you are mesmerized by how beautiful the subjects and scenes look on the ground glass.
At least I am
