New York June NYC Meet-Up

Cal,
Check to see that your clamp bolt hasn't stretched. I see this, especially with the flexibility of titanium components, they effectively stretch steel bolts even to the point of narrowing them. A grade 8 or 10 will take care of that for a longer while than standard grade 5 mild steel.
Check the clamp surfaces themselves when tight to make sure they aren't bottoming out against each other, preventing it from fully tightening.
Another thing you can do is the "beer can" shim. It's just that, a piece of aluminum can to take up space within the clamp.
I'd like to see this thing one day.
We have a gen 1 Stumpjumper at the shop which I may bite on. I love the ancient mountain bikes.

Phil Forrest.

Phil,

I think a stretched 6mm bolts were the case that was compounded by my upper body strength's use of leverage on the backsweep on the bars.

I used Ti bolts which have some spring to them, anyways more than steel. I went back to steel bolts. Also I had a wider shim to prevent handlebar creaking, but the anodize and the machining are smooth. Double sided tape to increase friction was not enough.

I am now trying a narrow shim that has ridges that offers some bite into both the stem and bar.

One day let's ride.

Cal

Cal,

You may also have 25.4mm bars and a 26mm stem. Nitto make nice shims for that.

Joe

Joe,

You know me as a weight weenie. Today I only weigh 147.5 pounds, I am getting pretty close to my old race weight. The strength to weight ratio is mighty high for someone who is 5'10." My fighting weight goal is to be a welterweight at under 145 pounds where basically I'll be almost all muscle and no fat for speed.

Anyways with my skinny waist the Harlem Hills are pretty much getting flatter.

My rear wheel can be set up as a flip-flop, so I'm thinking of setting up for fixed gear to at least use in Central Park. Know that with its short wheelbase that I utilize this trick brake lever that contols the front and rear brakes at the same time to prevent jamming on the front brake and doing an endo. Gearing is 63.5 gear inches.

I love that double lever. It could have prevented my accident. Well, if mounted on the left. On the right, things would have been worse.

By the way, my latest bike accident resulted in a broken wrist. I have a nice cast to come to the meet-up with.

Christian,

My steel IBIS has the death lever and one inch shorter wheelbase that is under one meter.

Almost like an ejection seat on a fighter jet. LOL.

John,

Did you get your wrist set so you can still shoot?

Also know that on a doctor's visit I kinda learned that somewhere in my past I broke both my color bones. Anyway's I'm kinda famous for being graceful in bike crashes.

On one bad crash I actually loosened some of my teeth. If it were not for my helmet perhaps my right ear might of gotten sliced off by my chain ring of my bike. Right above my ear my helmet had a chain ring scar. In slow motion I was rolling and I could see my bike doing cartwheels behind me; I could see that my bike wan I were going to merge again, but in a bad way; and I had to slightly deflect the bike before it hit me.

All this happening like a car accident in slow motion. This happened at the base of a long downhill where a bath tube sized hole swallowed my bike because I could not steer around this tank trap. On my first lap the gound was frozen, but on the second lap the ground was mud due to thawing.

It was just a fracture, so no setting. I'm able to shoot without any issues at all. I don't even think about it while I'm photographing to be honest. It becomes a pain when dressing, sleeping, and typing.

Funny you mention that... I was told I had some old breaks in my hand that I didn't know about either. Most likely skateboarding. It's funny how much you'll deal with when you are young and in love with a sport.

John,

We are old tough guys. Don't mess with us. Especially because we have the propensity to go crazy. LOL.

As a "trunk gypsy" who moves around a lot I have an exhibition opportunity in the Manhattan Ministorage in Soho for a 10 person group show that is curated by "No Longer Empty," an organization that utilizes unused spaces for exhibitions.

Anyways the curators are rather high ended, and so is the concept.

To be eligible you have to already be a holder of a storage unit. There will be a selection of 20 artists that will be interviewed for a documentry, and out of those twenty ten will be selected for the exhibition. The exhibit is for only 10 days though.

Anyways I rent two units, a full darkroom is in storage, as well as some of my paintings from the 70's and 80's. Instead of doing a studio visit, which is what they normally do, they will visit your storage unit sometime in July if you make the initial selection.

Anyways seems like a great opportunity for a trunk gypsy like me.

John - I am sorry to hear about your injury. Speedy recovery!

Will have to miss the meetup in June as I will be in Chicago. Will try to make it in July.

John

That sucks John. Hopefully it will heal fast. I hardly noticed my fracture after a few weeks.
I suppose you should be happy that it wasn't worse, like an under-cover cop pulling out a gun because you touched his mirror.

Hope you recover quickly John.
Wish I could make it up to the meet up Sunday, but I have car work that needs taking care of.
I will try to make it to the July meet up.

Yes Christian, I thought of you... but I think yours was worse. Your scenario certainly was. I'm going to Chile on July 1st for 10 days and the cast is on until I come back at least.

I looked at and counted the seven prints I made of Eastern State Penitentiary. I am pleased with the results. I will be bringing these to the Meet-Up.
