Oh well... I must admit, I love lots of contrast and sharpness...

I dont really have much experience on rangefinders or FSU material, but for all I have seen on this forum (and there is really a lot of info) I got to know that the Jupiter 8 is (when you have a good one) a very good performer.
However, I also have seen that the Industar 61 is known for its efective sharpness and contrast...

My budget for photography is really gone, but I have been tempted to test one of these I61 because they can be found at very atractive (I mean low ehehe) prices...

I was just wondering... Should I go and buy one? is the difference of the I61 to the J8 worth the trouble of changing lenses on my Zorki 4 (and maybe have to tune it to the camera) ?

Thanks and sorry if this is a repeated thread.....

Greetings from Portugal 🙂

Sergio

I would get both an I61 and a J8 😉 The I61 is really a great lens! Some would qualify it tack-sharp however, compared to the J8. I personally like both, as I need to fondle my numerous lenses 😉

The I61 is a great lens ..depends on what body it's on for me..I prefer the J8 in silver when attached to say, my Zorki 1 or Fed 1..the I61 looks too modern on these bodies..again I'm like Darkkavenger..can't beat a bit of Russian glass fondling!

I, too, find the Industar slightly sharper than my J8, even though the I61 came free on a Zorki that arrived last year.
Oh, and if you find a J9 85mm at a good price, grab it. Great portrait lens. 🙂

My Fed3 came equipped with a panda I-61 (silver & black) 52/2.8 ... wonderful lens! I like the J8 as well, but I'm using it on a Kiev-2A. The lens is the one that fits originally the camera and is also from 1956. You wouldn't believe how clean it is!

The president of the Soviet Supreme of the FSU politburo (me) says:
Succumb to the soviet GAS attack!

though i do not have a J8, i use my I61 L/D on both my FED2 and Leica M3. this lens is one of the greatest lenses ever made and i'm very much satisfied with it. most of the time, especially during daylight, i prefer the I61 L/D on my M3 compared to the lens that came with it...a Summarit 50/1.4....for it's contrast. the summarit, gives a soft effect. with it's widest aperture, i usually use it during night time and low light situations, giving it a more contrasty outcome.

go and grab the I61!!! 😉

In my experience the J8 gives butter smooth, creamy bokeh, has a slghtly low contast and wonderful colour fidelity.

The I-61 L/D I find overly contrasty and harsh. Haven't used it enough to check the bokeh but I find the colour fidelity to be slightly off, more yellowish (warmer toned) than I'd expect. Combined with the contrastiness, I find the I-61 L/D delivers images that look to me like they were taken on a sunny but cold winter morning. Does that make sense? 🙂

BTW, I never shoot B&W so I can't relate any experience in that department.

Thanks for all your thoughts on these two lenses 🙂

I definitly will try to get a Industar 61, lets see If I can get a cheap one with a Fed attached to it 😀

Any preferences on the I-61 date/ LD/ etc?

Regards 🙂

get the FED with mushroom shaped rewind knob, and with strap lugs

Oh well... Saw a pretty I61 on ebay... and couldnt resist it. No Fed attached to it but the price was unbelievable (about 15 euro including posting to Portugal).

Still no news from the seller, but I think this might take a long time to arrive here for the post price...

How long does it usually take from Kiev to western europe?

Hi Sergio,

I have bought two I-61s from the Ukraine - one I-61 Panda (chrome/silver) and one black I-61 L/D. Both took about 1 week from the Ukraine to Ireland.

The earlier chrome/silver version is much better made, optically I haven't got results developed yet... but soon...

[edit: And both needed regreasing, I used Lithium grease from a bike shop (cost about €2.50) Instructions are here on RFF and on the web. Not a difficult job.

Cheers,

Nick

Pedro, I live near the city of Oporto so it would be very difficult, but thanks for the offer 🙂

Nick, I am glad to know it wont take long to arrive, although still didnt receive any mail from the seller... But he has more than 1000 auctions terminated with good solid feedback. The lens I won are L/D, the ones you say are not that well built, if I really like them much I might try to get one of the Panda ones with a Fed 2 attached to it 🙂
This is really a fever. I must block ebay from my computers!

🙂
regards,
Sergio

Oh... I just forgot, grease is different from oil, right? Grease it's the solid like butter "oil"... i only got mechanical grease for big motors (like cars and stuff like that) and also diesel oil in my garage... I do believe that wont be good for the lenses, right?

🙂

Don't use motor grease. Most it seeps oil and this goes where you don't want it. Use a fully synthetic high grade grease.

Here is a sample with an Industar-61 at f2.8, but I forget the shutter speed, could have been 1/1000. Camera was a Bessa-R and I used TTL metering. Scan was done by Walgreen's pharmacy 1 hour lab. Only manipulation was to reduce the DPI from 96 to 72 in Photoshop the reduce the size of the file for upload.

Later,
Greg
