Just found out where the M8 is mounted and packed!

In 1973, Leica implanted a production unit in Vila Nova de Famalicão, near Porto in Portugal. Many camera parts are produced in Portugal, but usually, the final assembly and quality control are done in Germany (hence the "made in Germany" label). Does it really matter?

Cheers,

depends.....
.. may be, just may be get one cheaper.... ... nah .. better don´t think about it... better... still...

It was an obvious choice.

Portugal is where all of the complex electronics were done, like for the R series. Portugal has been in the "heritage" of Leica for decades, outliving Midland Canada.

I do not consider it a lowering of quality, but it is a lowering of costs. Well... maybe I should retract that point, considering all the non-design flaws reported.

Leica's production facilities-regardless of location- have always been state of the art, --I wouldn't worry about where the final assembly/deployment location was--at least it was from within the EU-where strict employment standards are praticed, and not, some developing nation where ee's are paid in cent's per hour/part...
