Just got a V700...questions!

Hi All,
Just set up my new V700...nice unit. Easy softwear I thought!

I first tried some scans of color negative film that i had just scanned on my Canoscan 8800F to compare.

The V700 previews are blown out and the color is not even in the ballpark. Using professional mode I tried with color adj on, off, ICM on/off and none of it made any difference to the preview image.

I can adj the image with the assorted tools but I cant believe it previews so far off kilter.

The auto adj seems to make no difference on or off. I select a preview then hit the auto exposure button and see no difference.

What am i doing wrong here?

Hmmmmm....now scanning B+W in 48 bit clr and the auto button works just fine... adds contrast and changes exposure

Yeah, color is tough. Try to think of the scanner as a way to get the picture ready for the actual work - getting the colors right :|
DO NOT USE THE SCANNER SOFTWARE FOR THIS! Get Photoshop Elements or something.

I have lightroom and sort of know how to use it....

this is a scanner setting issue. The same film on the old scanner looked typically bad as msot c41 does at first. On the v700 it is not useable as a starting point in LR

6x7 first decent scan...at least the B+W works well

Something in your settings is not right ... or you have a scanner issue!

I've had my V700 for three years now and have nothing but praise for what it can do for the price paid. Scans of correctly exposed C41 colour need little post work in my experience.

what are the standard settings for c-41?

I'm not sure but from memory I do turn the auto exposure slider back to minimum and never use the thumbnail setting for the pre-scan. Everything else would be default in professional mode I think.

This is straight from the scanner with no post processing. Fuji Pro 800Z

Not sure what you mean on thumbnail setting. I have thumbnails, group or single image options but it loks like I edit in the single image then go back to thumbnails to allow me to start the scan

turned the slider to zero and I actually have more or less the correct color 🙂

If you do a preview with the thumbnail box un-ticked you can create an accurate frame over the first image which will be lower left, then click on the duplicate button up top which creates another identical frame to move to the next image then repeat the process. I find that the thumbnail function has a habit of cropping images that are under exposed or have a lot of dark towards the edges of the frame.

I just turned my scanner on to check settings and in the configuration box auto colour and continuous auto exposure are both activated but as I said the slider is set to minimum. On the main settings it's: colour negative film ~24 bit colour ~ unsharp mask, grain reduction etc are all off! That's my standard setup for C41.

that makes total sense now..i was actually doing that as the canoscan i am used to did not think much of 6x7 or 35mm pano...i learned the hard way.

amazing quality of scans right off the get go.

why 24 bit and not 48?

I have a V750 which I've been very happy with. No, the flatbeds aren't as good as the Coolscans but I have a lot of old family prints which I want to scan so a flatbed was my only option. Mine still does a pretty darn good job, though.

Keith's settings are pretty much the same as what I use. I agree that it's best to use "neutral" settings, capturing the image as close to "as is" as possible and making adjustments in post. Seems to work best for me. As to the 24 bit setting I just don't see enough difference in the quality of the file--unless I intend to print very large, which I rarely do--to warrant the extra time and space of the 48 bit scan. I don't know what you've tried but I scan B&W negs in 24 bit colour as well. This seems to give me more to work with in the finished file...

What software are you two talking about? 😀 EpsonScan or SilverFast?

Standard Epson software ... I checked out Silverfast and couldn't see any advantage!
