just got the m8 !!!!!!! 1st question

Hi,

Just arrive from a short trip to NY where I bought the m8 (adorama) and the new 28 2.8 asph (tamarkin).

After all reported problems with the camera I confess I was a little concern, but after 200+ shots the camera seems to be ok, though I do have a couple of “strange” shots (one of them had a really strange effect where the bottom part of the image was not align with the top part).

I find the camera absolutely amazing to use and I'm really enjoying walking around with it. It has the perfect size, a huge viewfinder (I'm used to the D200), focusing is surprisingly easy, the lens is incredible small and the camera just seems to “talk” to me.

I was a little surprise with the finder. I though it being 0,68x subjects would be considerably smaller, but I see them almost the same size has real live (I can even shoot with both eyes open!). Also I don’t find that easy to see all 28mm frame lines and 24mm are almost impossible to see without moving my eyes around the finder (and I don’t wear glasses).

I have one question:
- The camera doesn’t come with a warranty, only a Leica postcard that I‘m supposed to fill and send to Leica USA to receive my 2 years warranty. The guy from Tamarkin (wonderful service btw, I should have bought the camera there) told me I didn’t have to fill the card to be entitle to the warranty as the invoice would be sufficient. He told me it was the same regarding the passport warranty on the 28 2.8 asph. Anybody has any thoughts about this? Do I need an US address to receive the warranty from Leica? Is the invoice sufficient? I don't want to take any chances regarding this issue.

Under U.S. law, you never have to register a product to qualify for a warranty, you just have to be real purchaser, so yes your invoice should be enough. Sending in your card may help you cut through Leica's paperwork if/when you do need to avail yourself of the warranty for repairs & service, as well as take advantage of specials they may offer to M8 customers. The main purpose of the cards, however, is to help Leica track its customers for marketing, quality control, etc.

I just got my M8 also. I went to the Leica website to register, but that seemed to just place an order for the IR filters. At the end of the order, the website reminded me to fill out the warranty card and send it in. So I guess I have to do that too.

I have had my M8 for months now and have taken hundreds of pictures. I have had no problems whatsoever, a great camera. I had to register via email with Leica to get my filters sent to me (still waiting) but I have not sent in my warranty card.

Congratulations on your purchase! Personally I sent the card because of the free filters. I thought the card would be the only physical proof Leica would have proving that I bought the camera.

Registering online is necessary for you to get your two free filters. They are still processing orders on the first batch. I registered online in late November and still don't have mine. Smaller diameter filters have been dispatched first.
Sending in the card puts you into Leica's system, but is not needed for service. I think it is a good idea to get into the system so that if you have a problem, you can speed up the service process. I get emails from Leica when they release updates, etc.

When you register for filters you are put into the system automatically. They can find you by using the number of your camera.

I registered for the filters, so I should be in their system now. If I lived in US I would have no trouble sending the cards for both camera and lens, but since I live in Europe I was a little concern about not being entitle to the warranty.

btw, when I was in tamarkin the manager was receiving a call from a client wanting 3 lenses: wate, 35 lux and 75 lux. If I remember correclty he was put on a wanting list for at least 2 of those lenses. I was amazed by the effect the m8 is having in Leica' business where even considering the crazy price they charge for the lenses they still can't keep up with demand.

I live in the UK and bought the M8 from Leica-Post on Ebay.
I registered the camera to order the filters so now I am on the system.
I contacted Leica UK this afternoon and was told for repairs I would have to send in the camera and also the receipt.
I love this camera. Today I shot over 400 photos in Belfast.
The camera at my waist with my 25/f4 Voigtlander preset at f8. I operated the camera with a 20"cable release.

I was told by Leica NJ (in the US) that we need to register online for the filters and also send the warranty card into NJ. Germany is handling the filters and NJ the warranty registration. ymmv
