Just had eye surgery today......I am so bummed out

Hi Michael, As a perpetual expatriate my advice to you is to always have 'Plan B' at the ready: either a second opinion from an ophthalmologist in Bangkok or a transfer to the nearest location with high quality eye care, such as Singapore. All the best, Peter

Michael,

Take some time to just relax ... and remember, you do have many friends here and we care about you.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery:).

Yes, I have a Yashica T4 and they are fun little cameras. Hope you have a good day being out and about shooting, instead of worrying. Best of luck.

Michael, best of luck. I understand the feeling being half way around the world from your family. But I know their thoughts and ours here in RFF are with you.
Keep in mind what the doctor said. I pray for a speedy recovery.

Thanks Peter, I actually did see two different doctors and the 2nd one was a specialist.......I read a lot about stye's on the Internet and had lots of questions........when I saw the specialist she was excellent.....we talked for awhile , got online and started looking stuff up on the Internet ....her English was excellent (I speak Thai) but in situations like this, I prefer to converse in English .....she examined my eye for awhile and we talked about all the possibilities of what could be wrong with it........I felt really comfortable with her responses ....I was pleased with the service that I received and felt 'safe' going into the operation.....I was scared of the pain, but I had full confidence in the doctor.......
But I understand what you mean....I always try to get a 2nd opinion out here about health problems .......I have really good insurance so the cost is minimal and totally worth going to the "best" hospitals out here.......
Thanks for your reply....i appreciate it

Cheers, Michael

And thanks again to everybody , reading this thread ( your replies) have brought my spirits up......and I am very thankful to all of you.......
Cheers, Michael

Michael--good luck with the outcome!
Probably nothing serious.
I'd take the nurse's advice and not worry--easier said than done, and prayers to you!

Michael, you're lucky it is just the eyelid. Good thing you went and had it checked out. Early detection is best. I'm sure things will be fine.

BTW - I have had four eye surgeries earlier this year. Two for each eye. One procedure for glaucoma and one cataract surgery, each. Scared??? I know how you feel. I couldn't work for two months. No income, nothing. In the end, everything for me turned out fine and I now have 20/20 vision! No more contact lenses or glasses!

Be thankful this didn't happen 50 years ago. Keep the faith. It is amazing what can be done these days.

Hi Michael,
I had a stye on my eyelid many years ago, and I well remember how painful it was, and how uncomfortable it made me. Hang in there, it will get better.

Not a very positive post here, but since we are all photographers here and sometimes we share the good times with the bad times......
A week ago I got a stye in the inside of my eyelid and went to a very good hospital here in Bangkok, I have been on antibiotics for the last week and today was my one week check up.......well, they saw "something" else on the stye and they are not sure what it is.....it can be many things......so I had surgery done on it so they can send a tissue sample to the lab.....

I will know the results on the 14th of this month on what it is.......tonight, I had a couple of needles stuck into my eylid and two small incisions cut into my eyelid.....it was very painful.......I am supposed to go to Myanmar on the 19th for 21 days, but as of now, I am just waiting to see what the results are before I decide what I will do.....
I have to wear this patch on my eye for the next 4 hours then I can take it off.....I am off the antiobiotics for now and have been given some ointment to apply to my eye two times a day......

I am so scared that it can be something serious, I started to cry in the doctors office and she asked me what was wrong, I told her that I am photographer and this is the eye that I focus with......she told me not to worry, there isn't any chance that I will be blind or have complications with my eye sight because it is on my eyelid, not on my eye......regardless.....my spirits are down, I am a million miles away from my family and loved ones and I am worried about the results........anyways, just thought I would share my not so good day with you fine folks here........

cheers, michael
Dear Michael,

Of course you're worried. But this trick may help:

Imagine someone else has just told you what you've just told us.

What would you say? "Don't worry."

When it happens to you, or someone you love, it's terrifying: Frances was given an 80% chance of surviving cancer for 5 years -- 10 years ago. As a prognosis, a 1 in 5 chance of dying is a lot worse than "no chance of going blind."

Cheers,

R.

It's likely you are in good hands. The standard of surgical practice in Bangkok is high by any standard. When my daughter was a student in China, her blue-chip U.S. medical air-evac policy specified Bangkok as the nearest approved center for high-level non-emergency surgical care.

Michael: It's hard when it's you that has the scary medical emergency. But take comfort in the fact that you have excellent care, a very good prognosis, and a lot of friends who suport you. It will get better.

Hope everything goes well... Sounds like u did all the right things before going thru with the surgery. Have speedy recovery.

Gary

The lady was right. Your eye will be fine. The advice for rest is good. I used to get styes quite a lot when I was younger. My first medical job was as the ophthalmology intern. I've done the procedure you've had. I'm betting on a full recovery.

As far as it being the eye you focus with, I wouldn't worry. If you had to use the other eye (which seems very unlikely) I'm sure you'd quickly get used to.
FWIW I finally got glasses last week for my shortsightedness. It's only -0.5/-0.75 so I still see enough without them but driving at night gets a bit tricky which is why I got them.
Anyways, turns out the eye I focus with is my 'bad' eye. I guess that's why my photos suck! ;)

From what you've described I think the chances are good it will turn out well. Anything to do with eyes is scary - I'd sooner go deaf than blind (but my wife says I'm deaf to her, at least, already).
I've had cataracts removed and new lenses inserted in both eyes and also a warty growth on an eyelid surgically removed and it's all been good. (Actually the reason I moved across to RF's was that the cataracts were making it impossible to focus on the Nikkormat SLR screen). I still have two Nikons, now never used, and they focus fine but I was by that time seduced by the smaller size and weight of the RF kit.

Hang on in there Michael!

Don't cancel that Myanmar trip, the people there have pictures they want you to share with the world!
