This is the last question, promise 🙂

I found in a local store a 39mm B+W UV MRC filter. I noticed that the diameter is right but the screw thread of the filter is not the same as in the lens.

The B+W "step" or whatever it's called is 0.5 which is narrower than the one on the lens.

Then I figured out that all the 39mm filters and hoods I have are the same as the B+W filter. However, the lens itself and the original rubber hood have a different (and matching) thread.

Are all 39mm filters with the "narrower" thread? According to B+W catalog, there's only one 39mm connection called 39/0.5. What about Heliopan?
They screw in and hold, but don't go all the way.

What is the common choice for a filter size for the 40 cron?

I know the original idea was to put a small filter (with no thread) between the hood and the lens. But do they make such MRC ones?

Thanks for your answers

Hi Assaf, the 40mm Summicron-C takes series 5.5 filters which are held in place by either a retaining ring (sometimes covered in rubber), or by the collapsible rubber lans shade which screws onto the lens.

Hi Yaron, how are you?
I know about the 5.5 filters and also have two of them the rubber hood and another ring with no rubber. As I understood you can't get new 5.5 filters in in MRC, and "most of the world" uses 39mm filters for this lens.

I just want to make sure that the ones who use the 39mm filters actually use the "wrong thread" (and can't install the filter all the way)

The "Series 5.5" are next to impossible to find. Minolta, when they marketed their version of the CL supplied the 40mm and 90mm Rokkor lenses with a much easier to find 40.5mm filter thread. Supposedly the 40 is the exact same formula as the Summicron and it's a known fact that Leitz in Germany made the 90mm Rokkor-C. It's an Elmar-C with a different name in front and the more common 40.5mm filter size.

My "solution" is to use a standard 39mm filter if I need a specialized filter on occasion, such as an 80-C or 82-B for color, but to otherwise "go bare". So far I've got a 30+ year old heavily used lens that still takes great photos. Years ago I removed the tattered remains of rubber from the metal ring of the original hood. It's just the right size to squeeze up into a standard series VI metal hood, and it's secured with a drop or two of epoxy. Of course the hood won't fit on a standard 39mm filter, but life ain't perfect.

Nope. I have a B+W UV filter and it doesn't screw on all the way. there is a small gap between the thread mount and the filter.

As an aside, does anyone have any experience with the 39mm B+W rubber collapsible hood? Does it work the same as the original that came with the lens?

I use the 39mm B+W filter on the 40mm summicron-C. As mentioned, it doesn't tighten all the way but just enough to make it useable. It hasn't dropped off yet!
