For those that use this type of combo, are you all image croppers? I mean, it would drive me nuts that the framelines would be so loose or tight.

RF framelines are not super accurate anyway.

I understand that PW, that is why I'm shocked that people add insult to injury by using a different mm lens with a different mm frameline. Also, depending on the camera, RF framelines can be very, very close.

Agreed... so, are you guys trying to say a 40mm lens on 35mm or 50mm framelines will be accurate somewhere within the focus range? Like if your viewfinder's 35mm framelines are optimised for 2 meters... then with a 40mm, it could be accurate at 1 meter or 4 meters (my math might be off, but is the concept correct)?

Using a true 40 is no more tight than using a 35 is loose when looking at the 35mm framelines in later M models. I actually prefer the 40, but I am rarely trying to squeeze things into the very outmost parts of the frame.
With any lens and M frameline, the distance to the focal point must be considered.

On M3 to early M4-Ps (recessed windows) the framelines are adjusted to 1m min. focus.
On later M4-Ps, M6, and forward, framelines are adjusted to .7m min. focus. The longer the lens, the more change in frame coverage there is, when going from close focus to infinity. There is an additional frame "buffer" for shooting slides.
I had and used several 40s. I also had my share of over-cropped 40 pictures. I stopped using 40mm due to frameline in-accuracy. The M 35mm lines are actually surprisingly accurate, given their definition (see above). I would pick a 35/2.5 Color Skopar over 40mm Rokkor or Summicron any-time for that reason. IQ-wise a better lens, anyways, both wrt resolution and bokeh.
