i'll tell you my 'dumbest' shopping move.
paying 57 bucks for a hood by getting caught in a bidding frenzy on ebay!
the same hood normally goes for around the 30 dollar mark and kevinscamera had one for 45 bucks.
it was a no brain move on my part.

Hmm, the most expensive? All things considered, probably my 50mm Leitz Summarit f/1.5
Got it for $200, but the front element was loose, and I tried to "fix it"...yep...all the blades just fell on the floor; also a bit fogged. So I sent it to DAG. CLA was $90. I then had to buy a cap for it, $30.
Experience? Priceless.

my dumbest move ever was buying a Nikon S "M" serial number from an eBay ad that had fuzzy, low res photographs. The seller stated that he didn't know if it worked or not, so I bid on it assuming that it needed repairs. It had the "M" serial number, all right, but when I received it,

Anyway, the camera looked like it had been submerged in water for about a year. Rust fell out in disturbing quantities when I was finally able to wrench the lens off. Camera and lens was a total loss- not even good for parts because of extensive corrosion. I have since learned to be much more careful in evaluating eBay ads. I look upon the great deals that I have gotten as cosmic reimbursement for the few instances that I was ripped off, or simply made bad choices like this one.

The cheapest Canon lens I bought is also one of my favorites... a mint 35/2 that was in a camera shop, and on display. No price visible, and I toted up my available cash, credit card balances, etc and asked the price. They thought $25 was a good value for me. I agreed, very quickly. That was in the spring of '98, but it was still way underpriced then. I was thrilled. BTW, I was steered to the lens by a pro photographer that I met through an eBay purchase. He wasn't interested enough to even ask the price, but knew I was a Canon RF collector.
The store has since stopped taking in trades, or selling used gear. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.....

Good deal: a Summicron 90/2 (second version) for $300. About a year ago.
Better deal: an Elmarit 135/2.8 for $166 on the "bay"... Granted, there's a name engraved on the lens barrel, but even though I had the goggles realigned for $40, it's still a nice deal. I think I snatched that one in April this year.

$40 for a mint Fed 50 Elmar. Nice little lens, actually a little smarter machining than the Leica vintage original. Plus it's coated. Don't recall about shipping from Hillbilly Russia...probably $20?
Happiest ever deal (modern times) was a 3.5 35 Summaron with VIOOH finder and hood...all near mint (perfect glass)... as sharp as my Nokton but also has maximum Leica character... the only reason I'd want a 2.8 instead (typically around $600 without hood or finder) would be speed. $540 the lot...readily worth $650 in view of condition.
Just got an exc 35 f2 Canon... $390...expensive unless one considers the price of the 2.8 Summaron. It's unlikely to be "better" than my 3.5 Summaron but I sold myself on the speed and the more modern aperture ring.

If someone has a hankering for nostalgic Leica glass I've got an EXCELLENT uncoated 35 3.5 ELMAR and a FUNKY finish, mechanicallyexcellent, optically excellent uncoated 90 f4 ELMAR...$150 together only. Such a deal!
